The judges had made their decisions on who would be the Top 20 for the fifth season of “So You Think You Can Dance?” But Thursday night was about revealing those choices — over the course of 60 minutes.
Just 32 dancers remained and 12 of those would go home.
First to find out her fate was Janette Manrara, who spiced up the auditions in Miami with an impressive backflip during a salsa routine with a partner. Janette said she could use some good news because since the Miami auditions, she’d been in a car accident and been dumped by her boyfriend. The good news came. She’s in the Top 20.
Diana Vrdem brought a lucky monkey with her, but Debbie Allen told her she didn’t make the cut. Lil C poured some salt on the wound by telling her that sometimes it’s important to just embrace the fact that “I wasn’t good enough.”
Vitolio Jeune dropped a little too much information, saying he was so stressed it was a “diarrhea moment.” He talked about growing up in Haiti without his mom, who died when he was 5. He was raised by his grandmother until she had to put him in a orphanage, which he left when he was 15. Lil C went through a speech about how Vitolio wasn’t very impressive until midway through the Vegas auditions, but he stepped up and stepped right into the Top 20.
Vitolio was followed by a montage of rejects, a small group of dancers who hadn’t gotten too much face time.
Kayla Radomski, who first auditioned in Denver with her grandparents by her side, said her family would be ecstatic if she made it through and she’d be devastated if she didn’t. Mia told Kayla she was glad Kayla auditioned, saying it was rare for her to connect with a female dancer, “but you are one of those few that has completely moved, I think, all of us.” Mia gave Kayla the news that she was in the Top 20.
Kupono Aweau, who’d cut his hair and taken his notes, had turned the judges off a bit with his hair and his “feminine” dancing style, as Mary Murphy put it. But he got to check “Make Top 20″ off his to-do list.
A montage of Paris Torres, Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi, Karla Garcia and Jonathan Platero followed. They all made it.
With nearly half the spots filled in the Top 20, it was time to see whether Brandon Bryant would make it. He made Mary cry with his first performance, but Lil C and Mia still weren’t sold. Mia started by telling Brandon, “I can’t take you. What you bring to the floor as an artist — it annoys the (expletive) out of me.” She said he rubbed her the wrong way and said he had a “fake smile.” She said she didn’t see what everyone else seemed to see in Brandon. Debbie Allen jumped up to defend him. Lil C jumped on and told Brandon, “You don’t impress me.”
Mary got emotional again, saying, “I just don’t want to sit and listen to this crap.” She said she didn’t think Brandon was cocky. Nigel told Brandon he was in, with four of the six judges’ votes. Mia asked Brandon, “What’s going to happen when we get into a room together?” “It’s gonna be bomb,” Brandon replied. “Don’t worry.”
Tony Bellissimo got through most of Vegas with his personality over his dance skill and training. Nigel said his dancing strength wasn’t as strong as it should be, but he was going to get a chance to learn on the fly because he’s in the Top 20. “You are the furthest we’re going out on a limb with somebody we just want to see grow,” Nigel said.
Another “yes” montage followed, including Maksim Kapitannikov, Caitlin Kinney, Melissa Sandvig, and Jason Glover.
Ashley Valerio was trying out for her fourth time and Mary strung her along a bit before telling her, “I think this is going to be the final stop — because this time you’re going to go all the way!” She’s in.
Randi Evans was a ball of nerves. She came out of the Denver auditions and admitted she’d be crushed if she didn’t make it. Mia told Randi she has “the body of a tigress.” Mia told Randi to commit to her artistry like she does to her unitards. We’ll be seeing a whole lot more of her unitards, because Randi is in the Top 20.
Alex Wong, who was in a ballet group doing only ballet, said he was looking forward to trying many different styles of dance in the competition. Nigel explained that Alex could not stay in the competition because he was under contract with the Miami Ballet Company and the director of the company wouldn’t let him out of the contract. The judges gave him a pep talk and told him to come back when his contract was done.
A montage of four more dismissed dancers followed Alex.
Three spots remained and Phillip Chbeeb was the next dancer called in to meet with the judges. The popper who wowed fans last season had that run cut short when he came down with pneumonia during Vegas week. Alex Shankman told Phillip that he seemed to have a bigger love for overall dance than other trickers.
There was one spot left for the girls and one for the guys — and the Kasprzak Brothers remained.
The Kasprzak Brothers — Evan and Ryan — cried at the notion that only one of them was getting through. But first, Deanna Brickley and Asuka Kondho vied for the final spot among the girls. Debbie told the dancers that one of them was very exciting to watch and the other failed to take risks. They gave the final spot to Asuka.
Evan and Ryan Kasprzak hugged and promised to support each other regardless of the outcome. Nigel said there was only room for one of the dancers in the Top 20, and he told Ryan to be proud, because it was probably his choreography that pushed his little brother into the Top 20.
