Cooper Barrett´s Guide to Surviving Life is a new comedy on Fox getting ready to take a chance at primetime, and the pilot is the show´s first attempt on that with “How To Survive Your Loveable Jackass”, premiering Sunday Hanuary 3rd 8:30/7:30c.
In the show, a couple years out of college, Cooper Barrett (Jack Cutmore-Scott) still doesn’t have his dream job, he’s possibly fallen for his across-the-hall neighbor, Kelly Bishop (Meaghan Rath), and he can’t seem to avoid major trouble, along with his roommates, Neal (Charlie Saxton) and Barry (James Earl). Rounding out the gang is Cooper’s older brother, Josh (Justin Bartha), who is constantly popping in to hang with the fellas and get some peace from his wife, Leslie (Liza Lapira), and their kids. Cooper struggles through the messy and hilarious disasters of life after college – a night in jail, crazy ex-girlfriends, going broke – giving us guidance so we can avoid the same mistakes in the “How to Survive Your Loveable Jackass” series premiere episode.cooperbarrett-guide-to-surviving-life

The show starts with Cooper being kidnapped and somehow going to a flashback to his housewarming party after graduation to introduce – even the episode is about Loveable Jackasses – a sequence of annoying characters to then move for a new look at him tied to a chair only to go back to another flashback about the gang trying to get back a television from a group of tough guys who supposedly stole it from them.

Cut to a Clippers – Warriors game of Cooper and Kelly and a kiss cam and him getting kidnapped in the bathroom of the Staples Center for the swap between the Smart TV and Cooper.

Then a fight in the car on the way back home and the emotional moment and scene.

All in all… a mess. You know how I´ve told you some of the new shows from the upcoming season are must watch? How I am very confident about some of the shows? Well, Cooper Barrett´s Guide to Surviving Life is one of my early candidates for cancellation next season. I will give it two more episodes that I will watch to see if it was just an outlier in the pilot, but boy, oh boy, was that a subpar new show.
