What is Army Wives About? – Plot

Army Wives is an American television drama series that follows the lives of four army wives, their families, and an army husband whose wife is in the army. The series premiered on Lifetime Television on June 3, 2007. The show had the largest series premiere in Lifetime’s 23-year history, and the largest viewership in the 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm time slot since December for Lifetime.

The series is set at the fictional Fort Marshall in Charleston, South Carolina, home to the also fictional 23rd Airborne Division. Presumably based on the actual 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg (North Carolina).

In the pilot episode of Army Wives, “A Tribe is Born,” Roxy impetuously decides to marry PFC Trevor LeBlanc and moves with her two kids to his army post. Floundering in her new life as an Army wife, she takes a job bartending at a local joint known for being a Jody bar (where civilian men go to hit on enlisted men’s wives). While on the post, Roxy meets Claudia Joy Holden, who believes that her husband COL Michael Holden’s promotion didn’t come through because of base politics. Another army wife, Pamela Moran, is heavily pregnant with twins – she’s secretly acting as a surrogate to get her family out of debt. Meanwhile, psychiatrist Roland Burton is trying to reconnect with his wife, LTC Joan Burton, who has just returned from Afghanistan. Then there’s Denise Sherwood, who is dealing with her son Jeremy’s anger-management issues as her strict husband, MAJ Frank Sherwood, is about to be deployed. The unlikely group bonds when Pamela unexpectedly goes into labor at Claudia Joy’s wives’ tea party and subsequently gives birth on the pool table in the bar where Roxy works. Not wanting everyone to know her family’s dire financial situation, Pamela relies on these new friends to keep her surrogacy from being exposed.

As the 1st season progresses, the four women and Roland all become great friends. They go on to face things such as deployments, abuse, hostage situations, adultery and the vicious rumors that surround them.

It should be noted that though the show is based on the book of the same name, and some of the characters echo their real-life counterparts, significant differences are in place.

This includes such matters as who was killed on the show as compared to who died in real life. For instance, Claudia Joy’s oldest daughter Amanda died on the show in the second season opener. The real-life counterpart of Claudia Joy lost her husband in a plane crash during a mission to find the remains of soldiers in Vietnam.

Amanda died in an explosion caused by a jealous husband. In reality, a jealous husband did kill his wife, but in a murder/suicide involving the real-life counterpart of one of the main wives on the show. In real life, this same army wife did become a surrogate for another couple, but not in secret or primarily for money.

The second season finale aired at 10:00 pm on November 2, 2008.

The second season begins airing on Living TV on Friday, May 29, 8:00 pm

The third season of Army Wives premiered on Sunday June 7, 2009 at 10:00 pm.

The third season began with a focus on the affair between Denise and her patient. The patient, Mac, meets with Denise to tell her that he is getting back together with his ex-girlfriend. While he recognizes that he loves Denise, it is best for them to part ways. This leaves Denise in a tough position, as when word spreads that because she had intimate relations with a patient the hospital fired her, her close knit group of friends is left with nothing to say, and judge her for her actions. They turn away from Denise, but the only one to stick by Denise’s side as a support is Roland — Roland had been in this situation before when he had an affair during his marriage with Joan, and Denise was there for him no matter what. Word spreads to Iraq, where Frank (Denise’s husband) is serving, and when the rumor spreads around the troops, the leader calls upon Frank to return home to tend to his marital affairs. Not wanting to believe the affair until he hears it from his wife’s own mouth, Frank comes home, asking Denise if it was true. When Denise confirms it, Frank asks her to leave, and declares that the legal process would begin the next day. The episode after this dealt with the emotional tension between Denise and Frank in their divorce proceedings, and climaxes when the two meet before a mediator to sign the papers that will finalize the divorce. Denise keeps hoping Frank won’t sign the papers, but when he does she reluctantly does the same. The next episode highlights Joan and Roland bringing the community together to celebrate the christening of their baby daughter. Upon hearing the preacher talk about forgiveness, Frank and Denise catch each other’s eye across the church. After the ceremony, Frank approaches Denise to say that he doesn’t want to let her go, and Denise fervently agrees that they should make an attempt at reconciliation.

Another major sub-plot of the third season is the Emmalin Holden character becoming increasingly flippant and (at times) rebellious toward her parents (Claudia Joy and General Michael Holden). When the Holden family sponsors Haneen, a young girl from Iraq, who lost her entire family in a bombing and is in the U.S. for a complicated operation to restore the use of her severely injured right hand, the girl breaks down and wonders aloud why she was spared. It is revealed that Emmalin has been suppressing many of the same feelings, not knowing why she was spared when her older sister, Amanda, was killed near the end of season one.
