Richard Coyle in the role of Jeff Murdock was probably one of the best things about Coupling. He was the Best friend to Steve and co-worker to Susan, the two main characters of this British series Coupling. Jeff’s constant sexual frustration, ridiculous stories and fantasies about women and sex make up a major part of the comedy.
The actor, Richard Coyle, not always played this insanely funny characters, he started out in a TV version of Macbeth in 1998 playing Loon; and two years after he was Mr Hammond in the widely critic acclaimed Topsy Turvy.
Then, at age 28 he became Jeffrey “Jeff” Murdock; who is terrible at talking to women, often stumbling and unintentionally making up lie upon lie in an attempt to avoid looking stupid.
He is known for a fondness for the word “breasts”, often muttering it during conversations.
Jeff provides most of the one-liners and comedy dialogues in the series, often coming out with naively insightful observations and insane social theories. Despite his over-the-top advice to others, Jeff himself is unlucky in love, and he rarely finds an opportunity to put his great insight to practical use.
Richard Coyle, after playing Jeff Murdock continued his way in acting, and is now in post production of Octavia where he plays the role of Gareth Llewellyn, and also in preparation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a movie based on the calssic video game.
What´s your opinion on Richard Coyle as an actor, or in Jeff Murdock as a character? Let me know.
I just finished watching the 4 seasons of Coupling on Netflix and I thought they were hilarious, up until Coyle left. Then it was only mildly funny. Richard’s gleeful perversion and insanely accurate insights and descriptions of “unflushables” “blurt and headtoss” and “too many legs” gave the show its excitement and hilarity. His boyish excitement in all things female balanced Steve, Sally and Susan’s cynicism and Patrick’s pretty but mentally deficient aura.
I would love to see more of his work especially in the comedy arena-he’s does it soooo well!
