Freeform, formerly known as ABC Family debuted its first original series when Shadowhunters premiered this past week with back to back episodes, so let´s take a look at the show and review the pilot episode to give you a hint on what´s to expect about it.
Based on the bestselling young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, “Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.
The show has several young stars and fan favorites, and some newcomers who will soon turn fan favorites too: Matthew Daddario, Katherine McNamara, Isaiah Mustafa, Dominic Sherwood, Harry Shum Jr (from Glee, I had a hard time realizing it was him, now that he is vampiric), Emeraude Toubia, Alberto Rosende among others.
In the premiere episode, Clary´s mom is very afraid of letting her daughter go out at night, as she doesn´t know all about herself and her magical abilities, and the “world” that she belongs to. But, as kids be kids, Clary thinks she is an adult who knows better and goes on anyway without knowing… that´s how she starts to get to know this underworld at the Pandemonium dance club where she has her first supernatural fight.
If you haven´t read the books you will find an interesting paced show of Sci-Fi for teens and young adults, but at the same time might get a bit lost in the pilot. Things start to get clearer as the show goes on. I´ll have this show in my DVR but if you are into Young Adult Sci-Fi. This is your must watch show. A good first bet by Freeform to kick start things.
