Recap and Spoilers for Psych S05E16 – Yin 3 in 2D

Open in 1990 with young Shawn on his bicycle. He rides past a dark-haired woman (Mr. Yang?) and stares at her as she unloads groceries.

In “present day” Shawn and Gus meet with Karen who tells them a woman, Allison Cowley, claiming to have been abducted by serial killer Mr. Yin won’t give a statement to anyone but Shawn. The guys get those calls all the time and don’t buy it.

They meet with Cowley (Mena Suvari) who is visibly shaken and tells a story of being chained to a pipe. When Shawn says he has no connection to Yin, she pulls out a framed picture she stole from him on the way out: It is a young Shawn with Yang.

Cowley takes to the place where she was held and the police break down the door to find a family of four eating breakfast. They sheepishly apologize and are furious at Cowley, who sticks with her story. Lassie now thinks her photo must have been photoshopped. Cowly blindfolds herself and is able to identify the entire first level of the house from memory. Jules is worried that Shawn seems to buy this girls’ story.

The guys have Cowley stay with Henry.

A photo analyst tells the guys the picture of Shawn with Yang is real, thought the background is fake.

In Shawn’s room Cowley begins to cry. Shawn is the only person that believes her.

Jules tries to convince Lassie to give Cowley the benefit of the doubt.

Henry wakes up on the couch to a loud noise. He grabs his gun to investigate and finds Cowley is gone. On the bed is an outline of the Yin and Yang symbol in red tape.

Henry is furious he let Cowley be taken.

Shawn and Gus go to visit Yang in the institution and ask for help. He wants to know why he can’t remember the photo or where it was taken. She refuses to simply tell them where it was taken unless she’s taken to where Cowley was taken.

Henry calls Madeleine to ask about Shawn’s outfit in the picture. He tells her it’s about Yin but doesn’t get any info before Yang shows up with the guys. Yang says Yin was gentle with Cowley and Shawn remembers Cowley telling him Yin thought she was “special.” Yang suggests sometimes what takes Yin takes is important. One of his army men is missing and two of his 80s albums are missing. Based on the albums Shawn thinks this is related to a teacher of Cowley’s.

They get Cowley’s class schedule and Shawn lead police right to a Romantic History class. A sub is there and he tells them the regular professor left an exercise where students write a story using all the main particulars of Cowley’s abduction. In the end the girl dies.

An administrator tells them the professor, Karl Rotmensen, hadn’t shown up in a week. He is a well-respected teacher and the college was lucky to get him.

Madeleine comes to Henry’s place and they look over old pictures of Shawn. Shawn shows up with Gus and Jules. The address Yin gave the college was a field and in the middle was a bag of video tapes labeled “For Shawn.” On the tapes is criminal psychologist (and Yin victim) Mary Lightly rambling through video diaries. Shawn thinks Yin left this there intentionally because he at the end, either they get him now or not at all. On the video two days before his murder he suggests Yin might be jealous of Yang’s fame and could be about to take revenge. He doesn’t think Yang ever truly exhibited the traits of an aggressor.

Henry and Madeleine find a picture of Yang with Shawn and start to talk about where it was taken.

Cut back to the video where video of Cowler tied to a pipe has been spliced in. It appears to be a basement.

Back to Madeleine telling Henry that one day she ran into a sad-looking Yang who asked to have her picture taken with Shawn because he was the luckiest boy she’d ever seen. She never saw her again. The picture was taken at a house three blocks away.

The group arrived at the house and find a note in the mailbox telling them to come in alone “or the girl dies.” One inside metal bars lock over the doors and the recent phone message between Henry and Madeleine is played over speakers.

Outside the cops pull up. Henry smashes a basement window.

The guys find Cowley downstairs. She tells them nothing is going to be okay, then promptly pulls out a shotgun and reveals that Yin is the master and “I’m the apprentice.” Cowley takes them upstairs, all the while ripping them for being so easy to capture. She takes them to a room where a shadowy figure is sitting.

The police have no way to get in and are calling for a battering ram.

Yin sends Cowley away and reveals himself. He pulls out a hypodermic needle and tells them it is something lethal.

The have brought Yang to the house. Her terms are that she go in alone with Jules alone in exchange for another picture with Shawn. Inside she tells Jules she’s Shawn’s only chance at survival before smashing a light and running up the stairs.

Yin tells them the needle holds a deadly mix called “Last Kiss.” The begin arguing over who should be killed first.

Jules, who has lost Yang, makes her way through the first floor. She runs into Cowley who immediately starts crying and pretending to be the victim again. In the basement Jules realizes her story is bogus and the two start fighting. Jules ultimately wins the fight.

Yin tells the guys the needle is just for Gus. He has something more creative for Shawn. Right before killing Gus they demand he give them an explanation. He says Yang was obsessed with him since he was a kid, that Yin didn’t know about him until he was an adult. Yang broke his trust to save Madeleine and he blames Shawn. At this moment Yang walks in the room and says “Hi, Daddy.” They begin to argue. She apologizes and says she just wants to come home. As they hug Yang grabs the needle and sticks it in Yin’s chest.

Outside the guys watch Cowley taken away in a squad car. Shawn realizes that Yang never killed anyone, but she says he was weak and should have stopped him.

At the station Shawn finds a disturbed Jules sitting over her statement. She’s upset because the crazies keep on coming. They agree to protect each other and kiss. Lassie happened to be watching through the one-way glass and now knows they are together. He looks devastated.

Recap for Psych S05E14 – The Polarizing Express

Recap by MikeSaros

We open with a TV report that Shawn has apparently been caught by surveillance cameras breaking into residence and ruining a huge case against a criminal called Zarsky who in known for intimidating potential witnesses.

A furious district attorney tells Karen that a judge have thrown out the evidence because of Shawn’s trespassing. He suggests SBPD take a long look at their methods and immediately runs to the media and hangs the department and its consultants out to dry.

Shawn is brought into Karen’s office for a meeting with her and Henry. She ends up firing Henry and suspending Shawn.

Shawn and Henry have a fight, the result of which is father telling son he can’t help wondering what might have happened if he’d never come to Santa Barbara.

Shawn falls asleep in front of the TV thinking about that very thing. He wakes up in a dream, greeted by dwarf actor Tony Cox who is representing his superego. Cox is her to show Shawn what would have happened had he never come to Santa Barbara.

Shawn and Cox visit Henry and see is a shell of his former self, miserable because Shawn’s mother is re-marrying.

Next they go see Gus, who lives with his wife and her son from a previous relationship, as well as his alcoholic mother-in-law. Shawns asks Cox if they can view Gus’ life in sitcom form, a show called “Wilin’ With Da Gusters.” Gus also isn’t do well, with his step son saying nothing but “he ain’t my daddy” and his wife running up massive debt.

They next peek in on Lassie, who in this reality is running a militant police form in a cartoonishly over-the-top way he absolutely loves.

To pop in on Jules requires Shawn ‘traveling’ to Miami, where she is still an officer in the MPD. Jules never ended up transferring to Santa Barbara. Shawn sits in on Jules and her partner as they chase down some dangerous bad guys.

Cox brings dreaming Shawn back to his office. He tells him it is time for him to grow up or risk losing his loved ones. Shawn’s 12-year old inner-child shows up and Shawn sends him away.

Shawn finally wakes up, immediately recalling a detail which proves the surveillance footage of him from the opening had to have been shot from the outside of the building.

Shawn brings Gus to the building across the street from Zarsky’s place where the video of him must have been shot from. He immediately apologizes to Gus and says he needs him to help him out.

The head to the apartment and notice a gas smell. They see a metal locking device under the door and Shawn says he wants to play this one by the book and call it in.

The guys go to see Lassie, who is still trying to find another lead for the Zarsky case. Shawn apologizes again and explains he might have a led for him.

Back at the apartment Lassie uses the smell as probable cause to break in. They find the camera and a cordless phone with countless out-going calls to Miami. With Lassie in the other room Shawn dials the number and the person think he must be a “Juan.” In the other room Lassie has found bomb-making materials and a schematics — this Juan person was trying to kill Zarsky himself.

Back at the station Jules finds out Zarsky fled to Santa Babara to escape extortion investigations in Miami. In Florid Zarsky had burned down a taco restaurant owned by two business partners, one named Juan. The female owner ultimately died in the fire. This sounds like motive to Lassie, but Shawn’s recollection of a piece of burnt toast in the apartment makes him think there’s more to the story.

Shawn and Gus watch Zarksy in his business from their car across the street. Shawn nods off and during a dream tells Cox his dad still won’t take his calls. Cox suggests maybe Henry is still trying to protect him and enjoyed working with his son. Lassie calls them to say they’ve had Juan in interrogation for an hour and he won’t talk.

Shawn talks to Juan, who so far hasn’t told the SBPD anything. Juan admits it was his fiancé who died in the fire, which was ruled an accident. Juan thinks that if Zarsky had gone to jail for tax fraud he would still have been able to hurt people. He had been casing Zarsky when Shawn showed up. Juan felt the need to ruin the SBPD’s case so he could use his bomb. Shawn promises he will nail Zarsky for more than fraud if he gives him a chance. Juan says it’s too late and Shawn notices a timer on his watch counting down from just under 25 minutes. “Zarsky’s going to blow up in 24 minutes,” Shawn yell out.

Shawn and Juan are in the back of a cruiser on the way to the scene. With his phone in his hand Shawn begs Juan to tell him how to diffuse the bomb, telling him to think of his fiancé.

Zarsky and his buddies are evacuated. With the clock under three seconds a bomb squad guy proclaims the location to be clear. Zarsky smirks and ribs Juan about his dead fiancé. Zarsky brags to Jules that the cops will never get anyone to testify against him. This prompts Shawn, Gus and Lassie to beg all the local business owners (who had gathered because of the bomb scare) to come forward and testify. Nothing happens until Juan tells them his story. Eventually multiple folks say they’ll testify and Zarsky is put in cuffs. Shawn then tells Lassie the whole bomb thing was made up, that Juan’s watch was counting down to his favorite TV show. Lassie says “nice try” until the bomb squad confirms no bomb was found. Juan is released and after Shawn leaves we see that he texted Gus with instructions for how to diffuse the bomb before the cops arrived.

Karen tells Shawn he will be able to resume consulting with them and Henry will be able to get his job back.

Bonus Track:

Interview with James Roday and Sheryll Lee about the Twin Peaks – Dual Spires episode of Psych

I had the chance to be invited by the folks at USA Network to a Q&A with James Roday, the star of Psych and co-writer of the twin Peaks inspired episode, and Sheryll Lee, the original Twin Peaks Laura Palmer.

Sheryl Lee:    Well, I keep telling everyone it was s such an incredible gift that James and everyone that’s a part Psych gave us, because some of us hadn’t seen each other from Twin Peaks in years and years.  And it’s such a wonderful group of people and it’s such a wonderful group of people at Psych as well that it was truly, truly a gift to – it’s hard to believe that 20 years have gone by, but to be able to see these people who have such a special place in my heart.  It was really wonderful.

Troy Rogers from Deadbolt.com:    Excellent.  And James, we know you’re a huge Twin Peaks fan, so what was it like to work with the real Laura Palmer?

James Roday:    It was crazy.  I was like – you know, I think there are Twin Peaks like fan boys out there who actually go to sleep and dream about what I got to do.  It was remarkable.  And like Sheryl said, it was like three experiences in one.  It was – you know, it was them getting to see each other for the first time after all these years and us getting to watch them.  And they were getting emotional, which made us emotional and then, you know, on top of everything it was the closest I’ll ever come to being in an episode of my favorite show, so it was ridiculous.

Only in our line of work do we get to do thing like this and call it work.

Troy Rogers:    And in addition to the Twin Peaks cast members, you also landed Julee Cruise to perform the Psych theme song.  How did that come together?

James Roday:    Well, we were sort of swinging for the fences across the boards with this episode and luckily we’ve set precedent with, you know, messing around with our theme song in previous episodes.  So, it was really easy to say, “Let’s go after Julee and hope that she wants to get in on the fun,” and she did.  And it’s probably my – it’s my favorite of the different renditions we’ve done of our theme songs.

It’s pretty inspired.  Props also goes through our composer, Adam Cohen who we just sort of – we said, “Dude, come up with a Twin Peaks-inspired slowed down synthesized version of our song.  Thanks.  Bye.”  And he had to do that and then Julee came in and just nailed the vocals.  And yes, we’re all pretty stoked about the theme song.

Jamie Steinberg from Starry Constellation Magazine:    how did you select the individuals who you would have participate in your Twin Peaks episode?

James Roday:    Well, a lot of it was the story that we came up with and then Dana Ashbrook is a very close friend of mine that I’ve known for many, many years.  So, the sort of seed was, you know, I wasn’t going to give Dana a choice.  He was going to have to be in no matter what and then hopefully from there we could sort of spread the love and build an ensemble.

I couldn’t imagine doing a Twin Peaks tribute without Sheryl and without Sherilynn.  I felt like those were sort of the two iconic faces that if we didn’t have we might as well not even try.  So, they were sort of always on the board as musts.  You’ve got to have Laura.  You’ve got to have Audrey.

We were lucky enough to have cast Ray Wise last season, so it was just a matter of figuring out how to get his character involved in the action, which we did.  And then, it was sort of like who do match up for these characters?  And, you know, Lenny von Dohlen, I thought was a really interesting way to go for the Sheriff and you know, Robyn Lively kind of represented a second season of Twin Peaks all by herself.

So – and then we had always sort of planned on a cameo from Catherine Coulson.  So, we’d all sort of – again, it was – the planets really kind of aligned for us on this and it came together really nicely.

James Roday:    Again, I – it’s the most sort of transcendent experience that I have had on this show and that I suspect I will have on this show.  I mean, it – Twin Peaks was iconic.  Again, I think it changed the face of television and to be able to rub shoulders with this cast.  In even the tiniest of ways, feel like I, you know, got to participate in some of that magic, you know, will not be topped, so huge, huge honor and very, very grateful that it was able to come together.

James Roday (About what was the best moment on the Twin Peaks Psych episode):  Well, for me it’s very easy and I’m not just saying this because Sheryl is on the phone, but it was – you know, it was the moment, the precise moment that – you know, that Sheryl’s character opens the plastic and reveals the dead girl.  The juxtaposition of Laura Palmer looking at Laura Palmer, it was kind of mind-blowing.

A close second would be Sheryl’s character talking about the girl later in her office, so that was it for me.

Complete List of Shawn and Gus Nicknames and aliases on Psych – Lassiter, Henry Spencer and Juliet O´Hara added

List-Shawn-and-Gus-Nicknames-alias-PsychOk, if you are following a little this site, you´ll already know Psych is by far one of our favourite shows on TV right now; and we are giving it quite some coverage.

Well, now it´s time to do a list of the nicknames and aliases that Gus and Shawn have on the episodes of the show.

As you fans all know, Shawn usually introduces Burton “Gus” Guster by a different name each time, and sometimes he even changes his own name to an alias or nickname.

And for all of those who asked… I did the complete List of Gus Don´t Be Quotes and the Complete List of I´ve Heard it Both Ways!

Recently we had the chance to participate in an interview with Psych Stars Dule Hill and James Roday, and they talked about Aliases and Nicknames:

Dule Hill:    For myself it’s always been the one I think from Season 1, which may have been the first or second episode, where he called me Gus “Silly-Pants” Jackson. You know, I – because when he first threw that out it kind of caught me off guard first of all because I believe that was one that was just off the top of his head. And it cracked me up. I just thought it was a hilarious thing. And, you know, we’re big fans of Stoney Jackson over here Stoney and the Silly-Pants, you know.

James Roday:    …kicked it all off. So I think it’s always going to be special for us since everything sort of sprang from that.
They definitely come in the script now but any time we can top what’s there, we don’t hesitate. Everyone’s in on the fun now.
