Sesame Street keeps on going with great interesting educational content for the kids. It continues to address the needs of preschoolers with a ‘Super Grover 2.0’ Week, February 21-25, featuring special on-air, online and social media components focused on the popular STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum-based segment. First introduced as part of season 41 which launched in September 2010, the new segment featuring the lovable furry blue monster has proven to be adored by viewers. Nielsen data that analyzes the viewership of the one-hour show indicates that ‘Super Grover 2.0’ is the favorite segment among four-to-five year- olds; in addition, the number of four- and five-year-olds watching at that time has increased compared to a year ago. Given its popularity and the continuous need to encourage the learning of STEM concept , as emphasized by President Obama during his recent State of the Union Address, Sesame Street and PBS Kids are putting the spotlight on this curriculum-based segment.
Each day that week, Sesame Street will include a different ‘Super Grover 2.0’ segment on PBS Kids (check your local listings). The segment follows Super Grover 2.0 as he observes, questions, investigates and reports, literally stumbling across solutions to problems all across the planet. It is a continuation of this season’s curriculum, science investigation, which allows children to become active participants in the processes of scientific inquiry as they make observations, formulate questions, and investigate answers—skills that are the foundation of STEM learning.
Sesamestreet.org will also put a spotlight on ‘Super Grover 2.0’ with an all-new game; three new playlists; a homepage movie; new Super Grover 2.0 “printables” and activity sheets. PBSKids.org will feature Super Grover 2.0 on the homepage; plus it will showcase brand-new ‘Super Grover 2.0’ clips! In addition, even the older fans of Sesame Street can take part in the special week as Grover will post his favorite super hero tips on Facebook; plus there will be three web exclusives posted on YouTube.
“Super Grover 2.0,’ is a perfect age-appropriate way to engage children as active participants in figuring out how to solve problems using scientific inquiry skills. By modeling these behaviors, preschoolers learn vocabulary and STEM concepts that enhances their knowledge about how the world around them works,” says Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, Vice President of Education and Research, Sesame Workshop. “We are very excited to have an entire week devoted to STEM learning across different media platforms that help encourage young children’s curiosity in science as they explore their world.”
