The moment every The Goldbergs (and 89´s something references) fan was waiting for: An episode about The Karate Kid. Inspired by the “Karate Kid” films, Adam and the other Adam Goldberg face off in a karate match to settle once and for all a long-running feud. Barry and Adam go to Uncle Marvin for training, but the only thing they learn is how to clean an apartment. Meanwhile, when Erica and Geoff’s relationship becomes public, they realize that they aren’t the good guys.
Of course, if you also know the backstory between the two Adam Goldbergs, Adam F Goldberg, the show creator and the other Adam Goldberg -the one who played Joey Tribbiani´s replacement as Chandler´s roommate when he left briefly-. The beef between the two Goldbergs is about the confusion because of the name and a Twitter feud. So this year, on season four, there was the inclusion of the other Adam Goldberg on the show, and we finally got to meet him on screen. In the episode about The Karate Kid nonetheless.
The long -since last season- backstory arc of Erica and Jeff Schwartz with their first kiss on the previous episode continues, with the aftermath of their kiss and Erica obsessing about it. It is probably an arc that will go along for a long time in the show, (maybe in a Ross and Rachel kind of way until the end of the show, or maybe as a Kevin and Winnie thing where we eventually get to know what happened to them later in life. Sure, in this case, Erica Goldberg is the only character not “real”, as Adam F Goldberg in real life has all big brothers and no sister, so the romance between the JTP member and his sister is 100 % fiction).
Flash, Maver, Axel, Cobra, Paco, Thundarr, Egon, Clark, Spuds, Michael and Newt are some examples of the names Adam thinks about changing his own name to, to avoid the problem with the other Goldberg. The other option is to change his last name… of course, if you could name yourself Kenobi, you do it…
I don´t want to go into specifics about this episode so as not to spoil it for you, but I am going to list some of the best things of it that may make it the best episode ever of The Goldbergs:
- The Karate Kid is the theme
- The feud between the two Adam Goldbergs is finally addressed
- Barry´s mad skills at Karate are finally put to the test
- Erica and Jeff´s arc moves forward
- Bev´s gonna Bev and Murr´s gonna Murr
- Uncle Marvin (played by Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them scene stealer Kowalski – Dan Fogler) is the Karate Sensei
All in all, we are probably witnessing the best episode ever of The Goldbergs, and of course, it had to be The Karate Kid one.
Don´t miss it on ABC. Let me know your thoughts about it.
