In Breaking News, Former Argentine President Nestor Kirchner dies
Argentina’s former president, Nestor Kirchner, has died, after reportedly suffering a heart attack.
Mr Kirchner, 60, who had been operated on in September for heart problems, died in the southern Argentine city of El Calafate, according to what local media reported.
His wife, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, let´s remember is the current president of the country.
Mr Kirchner served as president from 2003 to 2007, and was being tipped to stand for election again in 2011.
He had remained a member of the Argentine congress and secretary general of the South American regional grouping, Unasur.
But he had been dogged by ill health and had undergone two major operations in 2010 alone.
In February Mr Kirchner had surgery to remove a blockage in his carotid artery, which carried blood from the heart to the brain.
He had a second operation in September, when routine tests revealed a blocked coronary artery.
Mr Kirchner was given an emergency angioplasty after complaining of numbness in his legs.
Néstor Carlos Kirchner died today, (25 February 1950 – 27 October 2010) was an Argentine politician, who served as Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and as a National Deputy of Argentina for Buenos Aires Province. A Justicialist, Kirchner was the President of Argentina from May 25, 2003 until December 10, 2007. Previously, he was Governor of Santa Cruz Province since December 10, 1991.
Kirchner was little-known internationally and even domestically before his election to President, which he won by default with only 22.2 percent of the vote in the first round, when former President Carlos Menem (24.4%) withdrew from the race.
Soon after taking office in May 2003, Kirchner surprised the world by standing down powerful military and police officials. Stressing the need to increase accountability and transparency in government, Kirchner overturned amnesty laws for military officers accused of torture and assassinations during the 1976–1983 “dirty war” under military rule.
On 28 October 2007, his wife Cristina Fernández, was elected to succeed him as President of Argentina. Thus, Kirchner is the current First Gentleman of Argentina. On 2009, he was elected a National Deputy for Buenos Aires Province. He was also designated Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations on May 4, 2010.
