Minnie Driver as a crazed mother? Yes Please. I want to see that pilot. A politically incorrect comedy? Yes PLease. I want to see that pilot.
John Ross Bowie has the colead role he never gets and plays the husband of Minnie Driver´s. The show will deal with cerebral palsy.
So far so good. I am sold.
The show is centered about Maya DiMeo, a mom on a mission, and her family: her husband Jimmy (Ross Bowie), J.J., the eldest son who has cerebral palsy, Ray and Dylan.

speechless pilot review abc minnied river john ross bowie

SPEECHLESS – ABC’s “Speechless” stars Mason Cook as Ray, stars Kyla Kenedy as Dylan, John Ross Bowie as Jimmy, Minnie Driver as Maya, Micah Fowler as JJ and Cedric Yarbrough as Kenneth. (ABC/Kevin Foley)

In the pilot the family is trying to adjust to a new school district. While JJ and Dylan are happy about the move, middle son Ray is not so much.

Maybe the rhythm of the pilot is something that can be worked on, as it appears as though it wants to tell everything in the few first minutes. Maybe that´s the rules of broadcasting at work and maybe it would´ve benefitted in that area being on cable. But if that gets a bit settled, the show could become a solid performer for the alphabet network.

After all, the show has a lot of promise: It has a very solid cast headlined by a bonafide star in Minnie Driver, and a seasoned funny guy like John Ross Bowie, it is rounded up with good comedians too.
It has an interesting plot and tries to show a different light of a family dealing with the challenges of cerebral palsy. All in all, a show to keep tabs on, hoping it gets settled into a good platform for this story, once the rush to storytell fast dissipates a little. It has my vote of confidence now, and I really hope it gets there.
