HBO launched a new comedy series called Togetherness. In its first episode things started with a couple at bed, with the husband trying to get some with the wife at 6 AM, but she´s too tired. Then he tries to masturbate and the wife doesn´t let him.
Later in the morning, he receives a call from his best friend who just got evicted.
Finally the friend agrees to sleep in the couch for a few days; setting up the series.
The cast is great, with The League´s Mark Duplass, Amanda Peet, Two and a Half Men´s Melanie Lynskey, Steve Zissis and Marry Me´s Ken Marino.
The show´s a comedy that follows two couples living under the same roof who struggle to keep their relationships alive while pursuing their individual dreams.
The problem with it, at least with the pilot, is that it is too much HBO and too little comedy.
Don´t get me wrong; I love HBO shows, but they tend to do overthought comedies; more obscure than needed, with less laughs than psychological struggles. That´s why I´d watch HBO dramas and shows like GoT all day; but its comedies have yet to make me commit to one.
I´m not sure if this show will stick or not. I guess it´s the Girls effect. I don´t like the show, but maybe the critics do and it sticks.
If you are more of the Modern Family / The Big Bang Theory kind of comedy person, you won´t enjoy this one either. I´ll take a pass for the time being and focus on other shows.
