Last night Dexter season finale was on. And it made the biggest audience for a Showtime Original TV Show. So way to go…
But, as you all must know right now. In the end of the episode Rita gets killed on Dexter.
Now it´s time for Dexter season five spoilers and speculations.
Is Rita really dead on Dexter? Or was it a dream, or a fantasy?
Well, to find out, let´s check what Mr. TV Michael Ausiello did on a Q&A with Executive Produce Clyde Phillips.
When was the decision made to kill off Rita?
CLYDE PHILLIPS: I would say we made the decision pretty late in the season. We didn’t quite know what we were going to do [in the finale].
Why Rita?
PHILLIPS: The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable. We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity. It’s a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into. Last year we tried to avoid that and actually I think we didn’t do as well as we could have. We killed off Jimmy Smits’ character [in the 11th episode] of 12 episodes and then we had to figure out what we were going to do in the 12th episode. This season, we knew that we were going to take Trinity out in the 12th episode and we think that the audience knew that, too. We had to raise the bar to as high as possible and then figure out what to do next year.
How did Julie Benz take the news that she was leaving the show?
PHILLIPS: She wasn’t happy. She loved being with us. We loved having her with us. She took it… professionally. She was greatly disappointed. She’s a professional. She works in television. She knew that this was a possibility.
Did Trinity tell Rita about Dexter before he killed her?
PHILLIPS: I don’t know the answer to that question. We haven’t talked about next season. But [my gut says] I would think that he did not tell her.
Might she return as a ghost like Dex’s dad?
PHILLIPS: The answer, at the moment, is no. However, had you asked me two years ago if Lundy was coming back I would’ve said no. We didn’t know he was coming back until this year. It just seemed expedient to the story — to Dexter’s story and to Deb’s story.
Some people thought the game-changing twist was going to involve Deb figuring out that Dexter is a serial killer. How much longer can you stretch out that story before you pay it off?
PHILLIPS: We’ve bounced that around the [writers’] room. But once we do that… want to talk about game-changers? Once we do that, the game is changed in a way that we just don’t know how to anticipate just yet.
Will next season be about Dexter juggling serial killing and single fatherhood?
PHILLIPS: He is a single father. But, beyond that, we don’t know. We don’t know if there’s going to be what we call “a Big Bad,” like Jimmy Smits and John Lithgow, or if it’s going to be more individual, stand-alone stories.
I understand you wrote two endings to throw people off. What was the other ending?
PHILLIPS: While Dexter was packing to leave, he saw on the television that a child murderer had just escaped from prison. Either escaped or fallen thru the cracks. So he’s thinking, “Do I join Rita on vacation or do I…” and then he looks towards the camera and he has this big decision.
That would’ve been disappointing.
PHILLIPS: [Laughs] Yeah. Compared to this? Are you kidding? Is Rita really dead?
CLYDE PHILLIPS: Yes.
Is Trinity really dead?
PHILLIPS: Yes. Cut up and drifting in the Gulf Stream.
Did Trinity kill Rita?
PHILLIPS: Yes he did. That’s partly what he meant when he said: “It’s already over.”
So… what do you think? Is Rita dead on Dexter? Was it all a dream? Did Trinity kill Rita? Would you like Julie Benz back on season five? We thought the writers were killing Masuka, but they surely raised the bar by killing Rita on Dexter. I´m still amazed.
[…] just ended an extremely big season finale of Dexter, that ended with lovely Rita killed by Trinity,so, now what happens on season five of […]
If Rita is dead… then we have no show. Dex was doing fine juggling the kids and rita along with the dark passenger, the fact that Trinity had time to kill rita… escape and then be refound by dex was a little stale to me the ending would have been better if he had everything SET! and within the next seasons 1st 2 epsiodes another bad wolf shows up.
Dex can take anything on… he would have known Trinity was coming thats why he sent the family OFF! When doesnt he answer his PHONE!!!! Even when hes… entertaint the passanger.
I hate that ending, I was really enjoying seeing Dexter jungle fatherhood and marriage. for goodness he just got married, give a couple seasons of that idea. i thought they would let trinity get away and have that stocking feeling that he can be anywhere and show at anytime. kidnap cody and start the cycle again but come on, rita! don’t even know if i want to watch without rita. this ending does not sit well, doesn’t make sense. so things like this makes me stopping watching shows. BRING RITA BACK!
To Lance,
Dexter was killing Trinity in the basement where Trinity had kept the 10-yr-old boy captive, beneath cement at the 4 walls build site. It makes sense that Dexter may not have had a phone signal and so missed Rita’s call.
i think rita dying is going to at a whole new spectrum to the show. Dexter taking care of two kids and his baby by himself. along with his job, and his murders he must carry out thanks to his dark passanger. it adds a lot more to the show, without rita there to help take care of the kids, dexter is doomed
Honestly contemplating not watching the show anymore. The constant juggling that dexter had between rita, work and the dark passenger was what made the show so entertaining for me. The family life will now be lacking intellectual exchange. All the kids are too young and the constant justifications and conversations with a family person are gone with Rita’s death.
That exchange will be substituted by simple excuses to the young kids, which is not half as fun.
I think this was a HUGE mistake for the writers of the show. They killed part of the formula that made the show work and there will be NO way for them to get it back now. I’ll watch Episode 1 of Season 5. But, it’s going to have to be REALLY good for me to keep watching it now.
I’m asking me a question ..How did trinity found where Dexter live? Trinity look for Dexter adress but result to he’s last appartement, Deb’s appartement now.. so how he found the dexter’s house to kill rita?
I think killing off Rita was a huge mistake.. She helped the show evolve, she helped complete the show. Her character cannot be replaced nor should she have to be. I would be so thrilled to see this be some sort of nightmare he has.. By killing her off you have most likely ruined the show. How will he now juggle 3 kids n his dark passenger?? I have been watching this show since day ONE, and my fiancee n I both agree that she was a indispensable, and amazing character. She helped Dexter grow, and WAS trying to show him that he didnt have to live with his dark passenger controlling his life. If he gives up the kids what kind of mood does that set.. And if he doesnt give them up, how can he possibly continue to live the way he does.. This was a HUGE mistake!! Please make this situation right and bring back one of the best characters on the show.. Unless you plan on making season 5 Dexters last season there really arn’t many place you can go now.. I dont care about deb finding out right now.. WHO CARES ABOUT A SINGLE FATHER OF 3 SERIAL KILLER!! its just stupid.. big mistake guys.. big mistake
one last thing.. I must say, I honestly believe you will loose SOO many viewers if season 5 doesn’t start with this being a nightmare and you have NO IDEA what your going to do next season, your going to loose a large amount of viewers.. I am an avid watcher and if i miss the episode due to work i jump right online and watch it.. I just cant believe this has happened.. I would have rather you blew up the ENTIRE Miami metro (without deb of course) then to have killed off Rita.. think about that.. that can be your season 5 opener.. it was all a bad dream and someone blows up miami metro.. you can do it guys.. make me proud
I think that if Dexter with his dark passenger and now the loss of his wife would make him INSANE. By normal standards he already is.. I believe that the reaction he would have would be to become a bigger vigilante and just start killin people who beat their wives and stuff like that.. It just seems hard to believe that he’ll be able to move on and continue with what he does.. besides who would?! If someone I was pursuing killed MY wife I would loose my mind, and if I am already a practiced serial killer whos to say i wont slip deeper into my deep dark hole..
I was shocked by the finale. It was extremely powerful. I am also disappointed. The relationship between Dexter and Rita is what developed Dexter’s humanity. I find it hard to imagine that I’ll enjoy next season without the Dexter/Rita relationship. Only Dexter’s son can save him now. The children need to stay on the show with Dexter. They need each other.
Losing Rita doesnt make or break the show to me. I tune in to see how Dexter deals with his life. (whatever that may be) He’s just had a traumatic event, it will be interesting to see if this pushes him over the edge into chaos. Right now he is a functioning psychopath, season five could find him suicidal with his “code” in shambles becoming more and more (self)destructive. Who knows, but I will certainly tune in to find out.
Killing off Rita kills the show for me. I will watch episode 1 of next season, but if Rita is TRULY dead … this show is dead for me. WON’T WATCH without Rita.
WOW, bummer ! Thank you for getting rid of Rita, she was so annoying this season, I couldn’t stand her at all. Now the series got a whole new dimension. Can’t wait for next year… !
I really don’t understand the hate for Rita. Yeah, I do agree, she was alittle annoying at times but wouldn’t you be “bugging” your newlywed husband all the time like that when he’s hardly home and you caught him in lies and communicating with him is pretty impossible. I just think I’d be the same also if I was in her position. I feel like the next couple of episodes are going to be depressing…where are they going to start it? Right where it left off? Or a couple months after Rita’s death? I really don’t want to go through the grieving phase with them if Rita really did die lol.
rita sucked! what a breeder!
i wished the whole time dexter kills her for being so annoying. but that was cool, too!!
thanks!!
I thought that was the worst ending you could have given to a show. Dexter had only just adapted to marriage, if you want the story to go somewhere you don’t go killing off a pivotal character. That was the dumbest move I have seen in a TV series, honestly Dexter needed Rita for the fact that she helped form his lifestyle. If it goes back to him being single then were back to the same old shit as season one. Not to mention the fact that the kids are going to be messed up at the loss of their mother, and his son…what is he supposed to be the next Dexter, I’m sorry thats lame. I’m honestly disappointed with the ending, come on a little more creativity would have been nice. The show at this point is going from possibility to far-fetched, there are so many times in the plot that things should not have worked out in Dexter’s favor and yet they do time after time. As for the Miami Metro? Do you really think they are going to shrug off Rita’s death with the same exact M.O. as Trinity? No! They would find a connection. The show was going down a good path, following a plot where Dexter is supposed to be looking into his dark passenger in order to find a balance between family and his alter-ego. Instead what do we get, a dead wife, a kid soaked in blood, and a whacked out cliffhanger thats less than satisfying. Congratulations on a fifth season, not that I’ll be watching. If your looking for advice on Season 5 of Dexter please read the comments above, and see just how many people find the loss of Rita not only disappointing, but somewhat crippling to the shows plot. PS nobody wants to see soap opera bullshit for the first three episodes because Rita’s dead! Hint: make it a dream if you still have a clue as to how to build on a plot.
Im glad Trinity killed Rita. Wayyyyy too much husband and wayyy too much Rita with her tiny little voice and questions and sanctimonious attitude. This show is about a serial killer and as Harry Morgan put it, it was too much. Now he has noone to report to and can go about his business
I too was shocked by the death of Rita. I’m not sure whether it was a good thing or a bad thing, that’s what next season is for.
There were times when I too was wanting Rita to leave Dex alone and just let him get on with his “thing”. Isn’t it amazing how some of us can empathise more with a serial killer than we can with a woman who just wants a normal family life? That shows us that the writing team on this show are very canny with what they are doing to us as an audience.
In the end I don’t really think losing Rita would be a bad thing. The show is called DEXTER, not Rita and Her Happy Family. We’re following Dexter on his journey, and if you live by the sword, sometimes you (or your significant other) dies by the sword.
The day I’ll REALLY be sad is when there is no more of this great show. We’ve been told that Dexter won’t be a twelve season long run. At the end of each season, I dread the day we hear that that was the final EVER episode of Dexter. Noooooo!!!!!!
OK, I yes Rita is annoying, but I have no idea how Miami Metro Homicide can rule it as a Trinity Killing. I don’t believe that Arthur Miller had any more ashes of his sister to smudge somewhere on the wall, the cycle was ruined by Dexter when he saved the kidnapped boy, Trinity always kills a SINGLE person in the bath tub( RITA is obviously not single) and as far as killing mothers he killed those with 2 children not 3 and he forced them to jump. The fact still remains that Quinn knows Dexter was up to shady business and knows that Dexter had left work early several times and he did that day to kill Trinity. The police are going to have to look at the Dexter as a suspect and in order to rule him out they’ll have to search everywhere. How could Dex have time to get rid of blood sides and his kill tools from his storage bin. He would look suspicious if he wasn’t mourning the loss of his wife but instead went to hide evidence that could lead to his arrest for multiple murders. The kids are going to be messed up indeed, and what’s Dexter going to do bring his baby to work. Even though Aster and Cody are not his children and the Grandparents may obtain their custody I don’t believe Dexter would be the type of person to abandon them he does have a “soft spot for kids.” Quinn will most likely keep an even closer eye on Dexter just like Dokes did before. How can anything be accomplished this season?! Also since Trinity is now dead the only DNA he left was his spit which I doubt will be found…(possibly just based on the fact he dumped the last ashes on the 4 walls build and his son smashed the urn)…what will happen interrogation, a tired Dexter… whats Dex gonna do… I really hope its a dream but I doubt it…? =/ Well I’ll miss Rita she had her moments
Rita kept the kids in check… Dexter doesn’t have enough time to please the dark passenger with two young kids a baby and no Rita. Plus I enjoyed watching Dexter struggle to figure out what his priorities were and then develop as a character into something more complex than a killer.
Do what we all want and make that ending a nightmare!
Ding, dong, the bitch is dead. Yaaay!
Now I hope we’ll get the old Dexter from season 1 back. The genuine, empathy-free psychopath who faked feelings, rather than the soap opera doofus from season 3 (and, thankfully to a lesser extent, season 4.)
I can’t believe people will stop watching because Rita was killed off. I loved Rita too, but the show is called Dexter, not Dexter and Rita. I loved the show since day one and will continue to be a loyal viewer.
Spoiler? You’ll have to see the new season! Its not what you think, Rita may not be dead!
i really think it was a nightmare, when he entered the bathroom there was that glowing light behind him and around his outline…. like when he talks to his father etc.
also it was to ode that his son now was sitting in the same puddle of blood that dexter once did when he was a young child. Who else knew that but deb and the father. Trinity could barely find the address… actually for all we know he never did find the damn thing… im thinking the neighbor could be a psycho or Rita isn’t really dead. If she is and the first episode doesn’t draw you back in.. i predict this show will lose a lot of viewership.
I HONESTLY don’t think rita is dead… idk i guess we will have to wait until sept 2010
Hello all!
Without Rita it is just another dry killer story what I am not interested in. We’ll see Season 5, but I fell a big emptiness, and I think I am not the only one. I can only hope, that the writers and producers are working together with Julie Benz not to tell everyone that she’ll be alive in Season 5. I think it gets a little boring that every single character in the series loses somebody, next time Laguerta or Angel will die?
Happy new year for you
I was extremely upset by the ending. And I think it is a huge mistake if Rita is truly dead. If she isn’t, well then that was a great ending. But if she is, I think next season will be sorely disappointing.
First of all, Rita doesn’t fit Trinity’s M.O. Secondly, Quinn is going to be all over Dexter. He looks so suspicious. Dexter wasn’t home all day nor was he at work. Third, great now he has three kids to take care of and take care of his dark passenger? Right.
Also, as for Harrison being in a pool of blood. Kids from ages birth to about 5 won’t remember a thing of their childhood so it’s not like you can make a new Dexter out of his. Nor would we want to see that.
And I agree with the comment below, now Dexter is just some killer, whose probably going to snap farther down the dark path into insanity. So what now he goes on killing sprees?
Sure he has Deb and the kids to make the story interesting but I dont see what good they do if you kill off his last pieces of humanity which will die with Rita.
And if you get rid of the kids from the show to rid of that little problem… that would be extremely lame. Why even bring them into the show?
And you know what? Rita annoyed me, but at the same time her problems with Dexter made sense. I felt bad for her at times. She loves Dexter and she gave him things no one else could. It would have been nice to see that for a while. I would prefer she actually leave him to killing him. You could do a lot with that story line. Now you’re just jamming yourself into corners.
I’m pissed. I plan to watch the first episode of the next season, and I hope Rita isn’t dead. If she is… I don’t know if I can watch Dexter.
If Rita is dead, how could she have left the voice mail on her phone call to Dexter about the moon? She was leaving for the Keys in the morning, ergo: the moon wasn’t out yet.
I’m hoping it turns out that Dexter is just thinking the Rita scenario as he rushes home after killing Trinity, given his possible state of mind after Debra tells him who he is.
I really hope the writers keep Rita.
Well I am a huge fan of the show and yes the ending was a great one but it has to be a dream i mean Dexter is not Dexter with our Rita. I think the writters got a little happy with the ending but come on how in the world can they wrote Dexter to be a single father, blood hero, murderer, brother and so on with out it being unreal. I really think they and i know how harsh this sounds but would have killed one of the kids off it would have played a better story line. The guilt of the kids death on his shoulders but still having rita to turn to would have been a good ending.
and one more thing im sry im to disappointed with the writters, But did any of them think about how much they have built Ritas character from i mean come on paul, lila, the drug addiction all for what to kill her off in a story line that makes no sense. if the writers plan on keeping Dexter a great show then this will all be a darn dream!!!
I agree with what others are saying…I couldn’t watch the show without Rita on it.
I’ll watch the first episode, but if it wasn’t all a dream then it will just be to sad to watch if Rita is really dead.
Bring Rita back, make it a nightmare… we even got showtime just to watch this show… we will cancel it until dexter begins with season 5… if Rita is in it… if not.. i dont care to watch. Thankyou very much
I know this is *just* a television show, but whoa, I didn’t fully expect Rita to be killed at the end of S4. She’s been along for the ride for 4 seasons and was the main reason Dexter is at any odds for what he does. She was the light at the end of his tunnel and he seemed on the verge of an epiphany – only to have it ripped from him so savagely.
Rita had her annoyances, sure, but she was the romantic rock in his life that kept him from being too far adrift, so to speak. Without her in it, I can’t say I’m very compelled to watch the show anymore, perhaps seasons more to when Dexter again comes to any sense of balance.
I don’t think of killing Rita will make this show more interesting. Basically, She is just a cover of dexter.
I found her annoyances are quite reasonable in that situation, without Rita, dexter could not hide in the shadow for too long.
Dexter is better be a “normal” person than a “lone-wolf” in season 5. So I am pretty sure they will bring another woman into his life, which make Rita’s vanishing pointless.
I also think killing lila is a bad decision, she could come back in the later seasons.
Compare to Rita, Deb is loud and bitchy and skinny. Sorry to see they killed Rita
i am so upset that rita is gone. she was my favourite character and now i don’t even know if i will watch the next season. my favourite part of the show was watching the dynamic between dexter, rita and the kids. it was totally the wrong move to kill her off and i think they will lose a lot of viewers because of it.
Batista sees Dex talking Arthur in the station, and there must be security cameras recording who enters and leaves the station. Arthurs family can identify Dex. Dex speeds through the streets of Miami, is arrested, and noone @metro is notified? There are too many holes in this story. This has to be a trick.
I agree. I was highly disappointed rita got killed. if dex’s life was hard juggling and that’s the reason rita had to go. then it makes no sense now becasue being a single dad of THREE, a cop and a serial killer all at once is going to be harder and kinda less fun… I don’t think it was a good idea to kill rita… i hope they bring her back to save this show because if the next 3 episodes don’t impress me. I’m gonna stop watching.
What the fuck writers did? They all deserve to be on Dexter’s Table. That migth cust them the entire Serie. U stupids made Dexter to look like a fool in front of Trinity & to him self.
IT WAS EXCELLENT KILLING RITA CAUSE IT MADE EVERYONES MOUTH HIT THE GROUND I LOVED IT..BUT,IT HAS TO BE A BAD DREAM AND YOU HAVE TO BRING RITA BACK CUZ WHO GONNA FORGIVE DEXTER FOR BEING THE CAUSE OF TWO CHILDREN LOOSING THERE MOTHER AND THERE FATHER THATS WHAT I DONT LIKE
This was a brilliant ending and as a follower for the four seasons, I think the writers did the right thing. It was powerful and brilliant story telling, as everything has gone full circle. Now Dexter is Harry, guiding his son with the code. There is still so much more to do with Dexter’s story. As a single Dad he will not have the freedom to move around to kill as he did before with Rita as his cover. He will find another Rita, another damaged soul to use for back up. Rita is dead, her character was dead in many ways from Season 3 onwards, the storylines exhausted, she had to go to make room for more tension as Dexter’s tale is woven with more depth and complexties.
I’m a huge horror movie fan and have seen some pretty revolting scenes in movies that didn’t even make me blink. But seeing Rita in that tub made me sick. She is such an important character in the show, and her character as it relates to Dexter is one of the aspects that makes Dexter my favorite cable series ever. Not to mention having little Harrison witness his mothers death and being soaked in her blood. I find it highly unlikely that a storyline of Mr single daddy, widower Dexter having to arrange a babysitter to go off with is dark passenger will be believable to fans of the show. I also have a huge group of friends who have agreed that if Rita IS truly dead they will no longer watch the show because any storyling that will be pursued now will just be hollow and ridiculous. I agree with my friends. I don’t think I’ll be watching the show with much interest anymore either. At least I’ll save money by cancelling my Showtime!
I hate the ending. I loved rita. it ruins the show completely for me.
Well, i did not like the ending but it made a damn huge impact on me and gets me eager to watch season 5. Rita is dead. It’ll make things more interesting, having Dexter as a father of three, maybe suspect to the murder of Rita. Guess his mentality would be No more mistakes and gget rid of the scum criminals faster so his dearest son will not get harmed. Debra helping with the kids, or babysitter. or maybe the two kids die in Disney land?? Maybe season fivve should be the last of the Dexter saga? with Dexter dying at the end or finally getting caught,or someone saw Dexter on his hobby of killing hmmm… i don’t want it to drag like some other shows, the cat and mouse game can only last so long.
Rita is really dead! Wham! check this out
http://seriesandtv.com/dexter%C2%B4s-season-5-spoiler-is-rita-really-dead/
Elliot (the kissie face neighbor) Killed Rita, and he is a serial killer, if She’s really dead, that is, and Yes how the hell is Dex going to raise these Kids and work and Kill?
First of all a serial killer is a phsycopath. Dexter is trying to be related with people, he’s not just relating.
So either way this marriage would end. If Rita was kept alive, they would eventually divorse. Rita would fall in some other’s arms eventually. Dexter can’t leave his dark passenger and that’s what Harry keeps telling him in the whole season 4. You can’t combine marriage, difficult work hours and serial killing.
That’s garbage, saying that that’s partly what he meant when he said ‘it’s already over’. Trinity said that so many times during the season, how can the writers actually say that this one time that he said it actually meant something other than what it usually did? I watched the scene where Dexter kills Trinity many times, and there’s no clue, no hint in anything that Trinity says that would make one believe he killed Rita. You’d think that he might have mentioned that, for one reason or another (if not to maybe save himself by getting Dexter to hurry home!). I think the writers had no idea what they were going to do in the 5th season, so they left it open, that’s why the scene where Dexter finds Rita dead is hazy, like one of his ‘dream sequences’. If they write a better story based on her being alive, then she didn’t really die. If they write a better story with her being dead, then yeah, Trinity killed her. Guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
They really really should not killed Rita.
Beacuse when they killed rita, what will the audience think?
Watch a serial killer to be a dad is much more fun then watching a single dad with 3 children, even Dexter give up
one of them. It will be wrong.
Some audience would say they hated Rita,Caz she keep asking,”We should talk” something like that.
I need to said those who said that must never been into a marriage. Being a father or a mother.Sad of them
Eventhough it’s a show about serial killer, u still need to
think about the audience who watched. U only want to give a twist in the end of the season. U must be wrong.Ruined Dexter.
I just watched the final episode of season 4 and I have to say I was sorely disappointed. My wife and I have enjoyed Dexter for four seasons. We loved the fact that Rita was in the show and not to mention that she’s HOT she’s also a balancing force in the show. It isn’t just work or Dexter’s bizarre history in the many memory pans that happen during the series. It is now, it is family, it is interesting! Now that Rita is gone I don’t expect (I’ll wait to see if she is back and that this was just a dream sequence) to watch Dexter anymore. I’m sorely disappointed in the writing staff for this show and for killing off such a great character. Sorry but you guys didn’t do right by us.
a woman with 3 kids doesn’t forget he things she needs.that is a very bad plot. if she really is dead “the show is over”!
I just saw the last episode and i’m disappointed. Rita is the one who made Dexter human and reachable. There is nothing now to ground Dexter (except maybe Deb) and it’s too hard to believe that Dexter can juggle being a single father, his job and his dark passenger at the same time. I really liked Rita and they were only married for a season! I’ll check in for the first episode of Season 5, but like someone said above it’ll have to be really good to make me want to watch.
Rita was amazing to the show…
I dont think you people should of killed her off.
The idea of her finding out or suspecting something would
of been great…
also trinity should of survived as well to cause more havoc
in the second season…
The season should of ended when trininty excapes but then leaves a note or something to say he will be watching
No Rita… No Dexter…
i’m so sad…
Without her the show can’t go on!
her death was the worst idea ever…
Bad job Clyde phillips
Really pointless to watch the next season(s) after Rita’s death. The producers may have a totally different agenda. But, one of the main reasons I loved Dexter [the show] was the way he juggled his family with ‘the dark passenger’
I don’t think im gonna even bother watching the next season :S
Disappointed or not I think we should accept the decision and trust the good judgment of the fantastic writers. Think about all the questions it left for the next season, brilliant story writing and clustering your audience!
I am extremely disappointed by the killing off of rita me and my friends think this is hopefully a dream or something. WE watch this show in my forensic class weekly i hope this turns around and julie benz comes back she is a great actress.
i loved rita, she shouldnt of died. i miss her. the show will be boring without her her.
you guys are mad, this ending set up so many new possabilities its untrue.
Dexter’s going to be bringing up three kids, with a sense of guilt that hes the reason they don’t have their mother any more. He’s also going to seeking revenge so he’s going to go off the rails. The police are going to be investigating why Rita was killed.
Deb is all on her own, she’ll blantley move in with Dexter to provide the emotional support to make him think about things, after he goes off the rails.
This opens up so many amazing possiablities its untrue. I can’t wait for season 5
How is Dexter going to satisfy “the dark passenger” without Rita’s help? Yes, she didn’t know about it, but she was helping him help himself. He was enjoying being a father and a husband. It was poetic that Harrison was “born in blood” like Dexter, but I’m hoping it was a dream. Dexter can’t be a single father, a blood spatter analyist, and satisfy “the dark passenger” without someone figuring out his secret. If Rita is dead, there is going to have to be some sort of background information to show viewers how she was killed and why. If it was Trinity/Arthur, I would like to see how that all went down. Killing Rita doesn’t fit his MO, all the blood on the floor, a Mother of 2 (Rita was a mother of 3), and Rita wasn’t a young single woman, she was married. I think the show will be very dark for Dexter without Rita around, I wish she would give him a break, she’s a little tough on him. I feel that without Rita, Dexter is going to get caught and that will be the end of the series. I don’t want season 5 to be the end of the series, I am enjoying the ‘softer’ side of Dexter while he still satisfies “the dark passenger”.
If Rita is really dead. I’m not watching Season 5. Because if she is dead, it ruins the image the audience has of Dexter. Although he is a serial killer the audience is made to like him as a person, for he is a good person trying to do good in the world despite his urge to kill, making good with what he has, even with a few hicups along the way.
I don’t know if I am just talking for myself here…. but…
We would not watch a TV series if we didn’t like the main character…. and thus if Dexter caused Rita’s utterly undeserved death… I can no longer like him as a character and therefore will refuse to watch season 5.
I also am very disappointed in the ending of season four, and seriously have no intentions of watching any future episodes if rita really is dead, I don’t care what new ‘twists’ the writers come up with. way to kill a great show
I will be really disopointed if Rita (Julie Benz) is really finished on the show Dexter. she would be a major loss to the show and she should at least appear as a gost at time to time like Harry. I think the ratings will really drop Big time if this is the last time we see her on the show
I am NOT WATCHING SEASON 5 WITHOUT RITA! It killed the story, by this move, the writers cornered themselves even more.
Rita is dead. So what? She was annoying.
bring rita back 🙁
so dont like this show without her 🙁
Wish they had of ended the series here, there is no where else to go now. Aside from the shock of Rita it was an extremely disappointing finale. They are all too formulaic now; Dexter kills the bad guy, the end. With the exception of Rita, that was a shock.
I wonder how many people will come to watch it in the fall anyhow? LoL. I agree the ending sucked, and doesn’t make sense. It ticks me off they killed of Lundy too, since it was Deb’s love. Guess they just don’t want their mains being happy or something…I believe I will get very bored of single dad of three juggling career and darkside.
The show has no point now, I will not be watching it any more. A really good way to kill it.
I’ve just seen episode 4 and what a bummer the ending is. Not Rita!! Please bring her back!!
If Rita really died this show died too for me! This was the worse ending, what I could imagine for S4. Dexter only build up his family and you distrolit in one season that just doesn’t fit.
If Rita died I watched

What a horrible ending! I’ll probably watch the next series out of interest, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I enjoyed the conflict of dexter’s characters a husband and a serial killer.
But one is gone.
There is no fun to watch anymore.
Bring RITA back, she was the one who has helped dexter get over his dark passenger..
Rita u were a darling, n i just hope it was a bad dream..
Writers how can u manage convincing ppl still that Miami metro doesnt get hold of Dexter, everything points at him killing the innocent wife…
Its a big disappointment
I just want to know if Dexter (the show) is coming back for a 5th season. I have been hearing rumors that the show was canceled and I want to know if it is true or false.
if rita is really dead, i will not watch the season 5 🙁
I always found Rita annoying, with her constant baby-voiced psychobabble, but this season she actually started to grow on me – which I didn’t realize until they killed her.
They really can’t just make it a dream – that would be the lamest copout of all. Now that they did it, they have to stick with it. As for whether it’s a “mistake” – this show is all about crazy plot twists and shocking revelations. And murder! And all season long Harry had been warning Dexter about the potential fallout from living these two conflicting lives, and that his family was going to have to pay for his “sins.” Dexter always gets psychological insight into his own “Dark Passenger” by comparing himself to whatever serial killer he’s currently battling, but it really looked like in this case he was distinguishing himself from Trinity, embracing the family life, maybe even reforming himself. So what would’ve happened in Season 5 if that was the way things played out? It would probably end the series…which would be one interesting way to do it, but instead they opted to return to the darkness.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out…it’s got to raise huge suspicions about Dexter, because why would Trinity single him out? How would he even know who Dexter was? Why teach the blood spatter guy a lesson and then split town? And the kids…I really don’t know what they’re going to do with the kids. You’d think they’d be even more of a handful and a “distraction” without Rita watching them all the time.
I was disturbed and disappointed by the death of Rita. I now believe the show has ‘crossed the line’ from believable to totally unrealistic. It has also lost a great deal of the interest, because Dexter’s juggling of his life is what made the show interesting, and he really needed Rita in his life.
I was more disturbed by the scenery used in the show. I really hope they did not traumatize the poor child actor (their baby) by making him sit and scream on a set of fake blood with Rita sitting in a bathtub of red pretending to be dead. That is a truly sick scene and I am glad that my own imagination is not so twisted and sick. Those writers have been writing this stuff for too long I think. I am sure many people would be disturbed by these kind of scenes and for once, I actually found it to be bad taste and totally off putting. I doubt I will waste my time with this show anymore.
The other scenes of him killing serial killers has never been truly sickening to me, and I’m a hardened horror watcher, but this scene was just bad taste.
Bye Dexter, you were good for 4 seasons, but you no longer exist in my viewing list.
I totally agree with Disappointed. When Rita is truly gone, Dexter will loose what is left/or just beginning to evolve of his humanity.
On the one hand he would blame himself and on the other hand he would seek revenge/going berserk – loosing his mind and going on a killing spree.Well for that he would have to break into a high-security prison and slaughter them all – no soul spared.
Another scenario would just skip 20 years ahead -a new circle begins – just forget about the two kids Rita left behind. Dex kept on killing like mad and trained his “born in blood” son to be a massmurderer without trace – reducing miamis population drastically – leaving only Deb, Dex and his son behind. Then Deb realizes who is behind all this and shots herself for being so blind. Dex will then be killed by his son who will then move to the next big city till he reaches the writers who killed his mother of the show.
Show will be dead after all…
t me i dont think rita could of died…… 1st the timeing, when dexter got the voicemail she was talking about the moon. 2nd, trinity didnt get the car till late in the day and dexter already took the oil cap off the car so he was not that far behind so he really didnt have time to kill rita if that is true. so im a lil confused at the end on why she died……BUT if you look at the background on where dexter caught trinity its the same spot where dexter wrecked his car when he fell asleep at the wheel……maybe it is a dream maybe not but we can only wait till season 5.
It seems like a dream to me because 1) as others stated earlier, it doesn’t fit Trinity’s pattern at all: Rita was not a single woman but a mother of small children and since the kidnapped child was found, the sequence would be all messed up (the bathtub killing was always the second killing in the sequence); 2) the ghost/vision of Dex’s father is always present whenever some shocker happens for Dex. Where was he when Dex found Rita? Not present! 3) The whole “born in blood” thing w/ Harrison sitting in his mother’s blood: that would be a pretty strange coincidence since Trinity knew nothing of Dexter’s past!
I dont understand the ending, because killing Rita dosent fit trinitys code. He dident kill that boy and Rita have 3 kids not to. but I am looking forward to see all their reactions.
As sad as the ending of Season 4 was, I think it has to be hands down one of the greatest endings to a show I’ve seen in a while. I loved Rita and hated her at the same time. She made Dexter human, she made him believe that he could be normal. Now that’s gone. So what will control Dexter now? His kids? Perhaps. I’d love to see a season where Dexter almost stops killing. Maybe this event is what stops him from being a psycopath or maybe it brings him to the extreme. I just hope that season 5 doesn’t end with him eventually killing his children or something. That would be a point I couldn’t see. I respect the writers for taking the show to this point, to making it this dark. However now I think the show needs to take a step back from this and show less murders and crime solving and more about the aftermath of this. I personally would also like to see season 5 be the last season in which I’d love see it where Dexter dies, the children are raised by Deb and everyone Dexter works with finds out who he really is, but the truth goes into file like many others at the department. It becomes as secretive as Dexter’s past was in the first season. That would be some great story telling I think.
I just watched season 4’s finale for the first time last night and must say after I had absolutely no desire to watch episode 1 of season 5. The show was dark but funny in the first few seasons and has become nothing but dark and depressing. A good show can run without killing off a good guy who is tied to a main character every season, it gets old. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just a whimp and don’t like watching babies in their mom’s blood and getting tired of seeing all of the main characters lose the love of their lives over and over. Another thing I noticed was that with season four the audience began witnessing the murders which occurred other than those made by Dexter. I didn’t mind watching Dexter, the vigilante, killing people but watching a sicko like Triniity slice someone’s leg didn’t sit well with me. Like I said, whimp. Which is why I’m not watching the first episode and if word leaks out that Rita’s death was a dream, I will jump right back into the show.
I love Dexter!! When I watched the season 4 finale, the ending was really shocking to me and had me shocked for days! I was like OH MY GOSH!! NOT RITA!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! It has to be a nightmare!! I did’nt even get to see enough of Dexter and Ritas Marriage, you can’t possibly kill the marriage this quick!! I’m hoping for season 5 episode one, have Dexter wake up on his boat after dumping trinity’s body, where he had fallen asleep and have rita’s death just be a really bad dream. Him finding her like that and baby harrison, it was all kinda in slow motion (like a dream). Its just not really fair! He had everything going for him with rita. They should at least go a few more episodes with Rita!! It will be difficult to watch season 5 without her.
Of course Rita is dead she is set to star in a show this fall. which does suck , that was stupid killing her. dex needs some balance.
im truly gutted you could of killed anyone else off and i would of gotten used too it but i feel theyve made a huge mistake killing off rita .shes the cement that kept dexter from going completely insane and kept him that bit human.I know now that dexter wont be the same so im not even looking forward to it anymore.if it loses viewers because of it then the people in charge will only have themselves to blame, everyone i know is totally bummed with it and we havent even seen it in the uk yet and some of my friends have already decided theyre not going to watch it JULIE BENZ ROCKS
I thought this was a great ending — it really shakes things up. I wish they had killed Debra, too — hands down, she’s the most annoying character and has driven me crazy since the beginning of the show.
oh my god !!! 🙁 i cant belive that rita is dead. i cried a lot. i am wondering about season 5 so badly. what are they going to do? But i should admit this was the best end i’ve ever watched. Please bring rita back :((((((
They should’ve killed Debra (She’s kind of whorish). You have to to keep Julie Benz in the show, at least as a ghost like Dexter’s dad….can do some sort of Good conscience-Bad Conscience play….
I HATE them killing off Rita. I haven’t even seen season 3 yet and I found out about this disaster reading some fluff piece n John Lithgow. I don’t even know if I want to watch season 3 now. I really, really, believe that Julie Benz added a lot to the show. Beautiful, subtle acting – MAKE IT A DREAM!! Have her back in Season 5!
I have to say that i began watching the show sometime this summer back to back. I just watched the final episode last night and I AM REALLY UPSET! THE writers shoudl be fired!!!! Bring rita back!!!!
lol you people are fucking stupid. ‘omg, i’m not going to watch this show now!’ good riddance. one, julie benz is starring in a new show, so she couldn’t come back to dexter even if she wanted to. two, it wasn’t a god damn dream, and multiple writers/producers from the show have stated this fact as well as benz herself. three, he’ll still have a family to juggle, or have you mouth breathers forgotten about astor, cody, and harrison? he’ll have the guilt and anger over rita’s death, deb’s nosiness into his past, quinn trying to nail him to the wall and a whole bunch of other stuff. stop whining because you all know you’ll be right back to watching dexter season five as soon as it airs. and loving it. fucking cry babies.
The writers blew it. The whole arc of the story is whether Dexter can hold it together until he rids himself of the dark passenger. Now he’s already lost so much that he can’t win. Nothing to root for. Rita’s death was really too sad to qualify as entertainment, and having Harrison suffer the same experience as his dad is 80s-trite. I’ll probably stop watching. Wish I had right after D killed Arthur.
okay, it HAD to happen. there’s nothing more to it. it just had to.
now that harrison has experienced what dexter had done to HIM, it opens SO MANY different plots that can be added to the story. rita was becoming to be the same character in every season, the stories with her would just get dull and boring, but now that this has happened the show will be more intense, exciting, and fucked up as it was supposed to be.
and you know your going to watch season 5 simply because you have to.. “your dark passenger will urge you to” lol QQ bitches
oh, and FUCK YOU to all the people who say the writers suck!
HOLY SHIT they are some of the best writers of the century! THEY KNEW you would be pissed about rita dying, THATS WHY THEY DID IT!
god you people dont think into this at all.. with rita alive what would they have to work with? the same exact shit as season 4! like there was nothing more to write. they wrote everything in seasons 1-4 with rita alive. now she must die to enable the writers to completely sweep you off your feet like they have done 4 times consecutively.
I keep reading in these comments how killing Rita will kill the show. I must disagree. I think it was a wonderful ending. Dexter has finally paid the price for his actions. In season four alone THREE innocent people died because of what Dexter does (Rita included). The walls around his existence are starting to collapse and it’s his fault.
Now Dexter will be the prime suspect in her murder and even if he convinces everyone that Trinity did it then he is now tied to Trinity. Trinity’s entire family has seen Dexter and will be able to link him. On top of that Debra knows the truth of his past and will start to link everything.
I think season five will be very explosive and we’ll probably start to see everything fall apart for Dexter. Too much has happend and too many ends are left open for him to cover his tracks. I’m very anxious to see how the show evolves over the 5th season and if it goes into a 6th. I wouldn’t be suprised to see the final episode (whenever it might be) involve Dexter finally being cought and the show ends with him being executed (as that’s what will happen to him if he got cought living in Flordia). I think it would be a fitting end to one of the best shows in many years.
After recovering from the shock of Rita’s death, I refuse to watch season 5. It sadden me at fundumental level as if a close family member passed away. I never realized how much Rita meant to me, but I see now that Rita’s death was a major blow to my psyche. She was a symbol of innocence and everything good in people and I don’t want to support something that destroys that.
I’m not happy with Rita being killed off. Her devotion to Dexter, as great as it was, was also tempered by a quiet insistence that he live up to a certain standard. That hit just the right note; after all, what Dex is really trying to accomplish is redemption of sorts… Follow Harry’s code, find a way to redress the terrible wrongs that people do to each other (payback for his mother’s brutal murder) by fighting fire with fire… Might makes right? Perhaps… But lurking in the background is the fact that Rita made Dexter a better man… Simple solution here: James Remar continues to be Dexter’s mentor in all things “professional” (serial killing), while Rita’s ghost keeps Dexter on the safe and narrow in his personal life–especially in light of the three kids. Bring bank Julie Benz… She is such a soulfull actor.
Okay….first off, I cant believe how many of you idiots think the show needs Rita so bad;it just goes to show how they commercialized it by the balance of a perfect little wife so people could relate more. She started to come off snotty, and like she was better than Dexter. He doesn’t deserve that! There was no real emotional intimacy, and she would never understand him. And shes Boring….sweet, but boring; i dont want to watch martha stewart(the contrast is funny but she could have a little hit more personality)how could you say you won’t watch micheal c. Hall be an awesome serial killer just because some boring wife is off the show? I’m SURE they’ll come up with a great way to make it interesting. Have some faith….
I first struggled with why Rita was killed off. Yes, her relationship with Dexter was changing him, but it was also what was helping to hold him together; it was giving him a new purpose. I could see Rita coming back as Dexter’s “light passenger” who battles with his “dark passenger”.
I didn’t believer her. When my sister ran down the stairs cradling her laptop screaming at the top of her lungs “She’s dead!”, I was utterly confused. Who’s dead?
R.I.T.A.
Of course, I found the idea idiotic. Of course Rita isn’t dead! I mean, she’s like, one of the main characters of the show. She’s my favorite character too. “But my friend told me!” she screamed. Your friend is wrong, I replied. So we looked it up on YouTube.
Oh. My. Goodness.
A lot of you are saying that it was inevitable and such, that she was changing him? I’m not saying that ending was bad – killing Rita off was as brilliant as it was cold, but brilliant nevertheless. I was hoping that Rita would tie Dexter off. Like, at some point, the series will have to end, right? I thought that she, and the kids, would slowly push away the Dark Passenger or something, and would inevitably change Dexter into a normal human being (whom enjoys killing people). But it can’t be helped I guess. Rita, dead? Again.
Oh. My. Goodness.
Having Harrison become a serial killer would be stupid. He is way too young to have been affected in that way. Not to mention that just because a child witnesses a murder does not automatically mean they will become twisted or a killer. I think the show’s tendency to make every killer be a result of a child witnessing a death is ridiculous. And it will be even more stupid if they do that to Harrison given the fact that he isn’t even a year old.
I hope Rita’s death was just a bad dream too. I really don’t know where they would take the story if she is actually dead. How will Dexter deal with that level of guilt? How will he deal with people looking at him suspiciously. Many lies he told will be uncovered when they find out he knew Trinity all along. It seems to me that they will have to create a bunch of unbelievable scenarios for the story to continue and that will just ruin the brilliance of the show. I hope the writers know what they are doing so the story doesn’t become so incredibly stupid.
I loved your formula with Rita. It was shocking to lose her. Please bring her back. She is endearing and very important to the story line.
I thought it was a bit corny to assume the child instantly became a potential serial killer because he witnessed his mother’s death. He was far too young to be stamped so permanently with this curse.
I absolutely love your series. It is addictive. We haven’t had anything this engrossing since “The Sopranos”. Congratulations on the fine writing.
I will watch episode 1 of season 5, but if Rita is truly dead(which seems to be the reality since julie Benz the actress who plays Rita is taking on a new role in a new show)then I will probably not continue to watch Dexter. I mean its obvious whats going to happen….Dexter will be guilt ridden….a suspect…etc.etc….soap opera….wow…how boring.
Just finished watching the show.. Here’s my take:
Rita isn’t dead. If you watch the sequence, the whole scene has the ‘glowy’ effect that you see when dexters father is around. Dexter fades into these scenes and back to reality all the time.
It’s a vision that Dexter is having about what could have been or what might be.
It’s confirmed that Rita is dead, just watch the trailers for next season and you’ll see that she’s definitely gone. I agree with everyone who said that killing Rita off was a huge mistake. I think the writer’s were trying to hard to be clever and to throw a curveball at the audience that they forgot to look at the big picture. The whole reason Dexter worked as a show is because of the dynamic that Dexter and Rita had. Of all the interactions between characters in the show the most enjoyable were the ones between Dexter and Rita, all the inside jokes between Dexter and the audience are gone now. Way to go, Einsteins. I’m going to start saying, “that show killed Rita” instead of “jumped the shark” for series that have run out of material.
Won’t watch season 5 without Rita.
The show no longer appeals to all the fathers that would do anything to protect thier families. The show has lost intellectual heft and emotional realism, no family dynamic.
Silly, hamfisted, amateur move killing off Rita.
Writer: “Hey, I know” sips red slurpy, “Let’s kill Rita!” nobody would expect that and it’s too difficult to write this real relationship and family dialogue and interaction when none of us understands it”. “And Let’s make his baby sit in blood” “Yeah, that would be so cool and ironic!”
Other writers: “Yeah, good idea. Let’s just make him kill bad guys” “Good guy gets bad guy – way easier to write”
Dexter has now become a dumb, one-dimensional show.
Stupid move.
Jerks! I liked Rita and the whole juggle thing. Way to go you just destroyed a show I liked to watch. You had better find a way to make this right again.
Bring Rita back. It’s too coincidental, the child sitting in blood, to moralistic. The timing of the last evening is too unlikely. How did Trinity find Rita’s house.
The show is too hopeless now, for the sake of being sensational.
I’ll have to wait for reviews to go back.
🙂
BOOOOO!
How disapointing to a fan base that appreciated the juggling act aspect of the show. I personally don’t think rita needed to get pregnant in the first place, new baby introductions are known in the industry for being ruiners of prime time shows. I predict that season five will suffer greatly from the addition of a baby and a subtraction of the mother.
Too bad.
I think that if they did kill off Rita they made a big mistake….and it did not fit Trinity’s Profile for killing…and we know that real serial killers do not very the MO that easily….Rita has 3 children and only two for All the others…so how will they enplane that? Alos Trinity did not kill the boy (save his innocence) which is also out of the MO of Trinity….and Trinity never left any child in the room….so there is just WAY to many details for it to have been Trinity…and stick with the MO….
I do hope that they bring here back…I think she was one of the things that keep Dexter more REAL and less a Monster….and makes him more relate-able …..
To kill off Rita?! Wow! The producers and writers were obviously looking for shock and awe. They accomplished their goal but at the cost that could cripple the foundation of the show. The show has been so unique from the beginning in how Dexter has been able to battle his humanity and his dark passenger. They have been able to blend it so well because of Rita. Rita was the perfect compliment for Dexter. Giving him stability and emotional direction because she was the closest person in his life. Dexter’s moral code is so strict and has followed it to the t. How will he deal with the guilt of having the best thing that ever happened to him? It’s become unrealistic and I’m pissed that she’s dead. I mean how often are you cheering for a serial killer? I think its because of his moral code and his relationship with Rita that made that happen.
Are you guys kidding (Sharna) you might not watch the show because Rita died. Seriously all I found myself doing this whole season (yes I know I’m late) was wishing she would go away and she did. Now the focus can go back on Dexter doing what he does. And seriously if you might not watch the show because Rita died then you don’t need to watch this show in the first place.
Wow after reading more responses why are so many of you upset about Rita. I was more upset when I thought Deb was going to die. And DMo from wherever I cheer Dexter on all the time.
Rita being killed off was a disappointment, being replaced by Julia Stiles was a tragedy
[…] Premiered a new season yesterday, with an episode called My Bad, following the tragic death of Rita in the hands of the Trinity […]
I can’t believe these idiots killed off Rita. They just made my favourite show into a frickin drama! What a mistake. No wonder the season premiere sucked! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think this will be a good thing killing off rita and the baby been found in blood maybe dexter will end up teaching him the code and telling him why or maybe he’ll get put in jail like he was thinking of in season 2 or maybe the baby will kill dexter in the end or one of the other kids if they found out what he has done or they my tell the cops theres so many new twists that could show dont go fucking off this show just yet i remenber when i first watched this show for the first time i couldnt wait till the next and then season 2 was the best one of them all season 3 well not so good season 4 made up for it season 5 has got a 5 star start from me i cant wait till next week and see how this turns out with the FBI been around dexter again
Every episode raised the bar and added new things, but this was WRONG. For me, one of the best parts of the show was seeing Dexter so divided by his family and his “DARK PASSAGER”. The twisted conflict and romance of Rita and Dexter never fully played its role. He never confronted her about her marriage at 16 years old; what would have really been cool is if Dexter finally confessed his dark secret to Rita. They could have danced around that whole dilemma for at least a season. Don’t get me wrong, the show is very ground breaking, but who really wants to see Dexter raising three kids. Just picture that in your head for five seconds. Pretty lame huh?

I think we can all rest easy knowing that Rita will be brought back to life by Wolfram & Hart.
~
HA! I told everybody Rita should be killed off at the end of season 4.
La, la, la, I was right!!! Rita didn’t come back!!!
She was getting to bossing… like the time she showed up at Dexter’s job bitching with the baby in the stroller!!! UGH
Sly
i cant believe you guys killed rita…horrible ending…too much freaking ideas…should have left it at trinity being killed..i dont even want to watch season 5 because of this BIG disapointment…you guys think with your i dontknow what…smh
thats it..u loose me, i wont watch season 5
Adrian, you should… Season 5 is going great so far!
It was a fantastic ending! However, Rita gave the mary poppins double life that he yearned for to keep him a stronger and more of a cunning killer. if Rita is gone for good! he will be an emotional wreck and mabe wont even have the energy for a good kill. As he will haveto look after three children. (there will be mistakes made!)
Whilst this mammoth episode was brilliantly executed, I am so gutted after watching the finale. As is evident from the outpourings above, the murder of Rita just doesn’t sit comfortably with the viewer. The soft, fluffy Rita/kids part of the show is the perfect balance to all of the plotting, killing and malevolence. We love happy Daddy Dexter just as much as we love murderer vigilante Dexter. Ying and yang. When Arthur’s wife and kids are interviewed by the police, they will mention that Kyle was at their house at the time of Rita’s murder. Dexter will have to explain his whereabouts that day and explain why he was in the Miller’s garage at the time of the bust. Someone will put 2 and 2 together. PLEASE make this mistake go away. Couldn’t Rita be nearly dead but not really dead? Better than a dream/Bobby Ewing scenario? Producers, you would retain so much credibility if you had the courage to do the right thing. Don’t be arrogant. PRIDE COMES BEFORE A FALL PRODUCERS.
How stupid could the writers get???? The fact that Dexter was a loving boyfriend/husband to an adoring woman who had not a CLUE that he was a serial killer was the whole premise of the show and what made it interesting.
I have been absolutely OBSESSED with this show. It was the greatest drama EVER.
But without Rita, I am never watching it again.
“It’s over Dexter. Goodbye, Dexter.”
I was so angry when i saw rita dead in the tub, i f***ing lost it.
I liked Rita and I think that the show is really going down hill now thats shes gone….. Don’t get me wrong I like Julia Stiles in other things but I dont like her on Dexter….. If they don’t bring Julie Benz back by the end of the season my husband and I will not be watching Dexter next season…… I would have preferd last season to have ended on Dexter coming in on Trinity holding Rita, Rita gets away, Dexter and Trinity fight for the razor then Rita kills Trinity to save Dexter not only would the fans have loved it then the writers could have build on Dexter being attracted to Ritas dark side……..
We want Rita back, please, please, please.
[…] plain wrong. The show is on a creative high. Many were wondering how could they bounce back after killing Rita on Dexter, but the writers surely knew what they were […]
Why couldnt they have killed off Debras lopsided face????? Rita is so much better looking and acting.
Why they didnt kill off debra thats easy to answer……. She is married to the star of the show so i’m sure that gives her tons of job security………… Trust me most of us feel the same way………. I can’t stand her, most of her story lines suck balls acting is not her strong suite………. To tell you the truth she is a butterface which means everythings good but her face……….. With two eps to go befor the end of the season we are coming close to our deadline….. We will be true to our word and im sure that many others will be to……. We get Julie Benz back or eps 12 will be the series finale for many of the viewers…….. Julia Stiles must go have you ever noticed that her acting style does not differ in anything she is in its the same thing over and over again……. Diffrent lines diffrent character same old thing nothing there most of you know that if her character die no one would be asking for her to be brought back some might say thats to bad for her but it would be no big deal…………
[…] plain wrong. The show is on a creative high. Many were wondering how could they bounce back after killing Rita on Dexter, but the writers surely knew what they were […]
I know of more than one person who won’t watch this show again since Rita is dead. She was the only thing that really held Dexter to “good” and if there’s no possible redemption, he’s really lost now. Without hope, who cares?
Come on, bring her back. Make it so that Dexter was knocked unconscious or something. Rita was a good fit in the show. Her and the kids are what made Dexter not seem to be a lunatic or bad person. I think that was a horrible decision by the writers. You could’ve had the same effect from the audience if you would have killed Quinn or some other supporting character, but then the effect would have worn off and the audience wouldn’t be as upset. Please bring her back.
Having Rita die in the last episode did not make sense. I agree there was no indication that Trinity had found the home address. I could have been done after finding Dexter at Miami Metro but the man was busy being manic with his family, getting the money from the bank and his car. Seems rather feeble of an ending.
I do hope that the writers make this a dream. Dexter’s salary does not support a way for him to have in home care for the children for him to pull off future executions. The show will struggle without him having the freedom to do his planning and implementation.
Listen to the watchers!
Rita’s death was a good thing for me. When she died i noticed that i could’nt care less and i realised that i didn’t love the show anymore. If a charecter who is that important dies and i think ,me and shrug my shoulders i am wasting my time.
So bye, Rita, Bye Dexter it has been fun, but now it’s done. 🙂
I wasnt disappointed when rita died…it was a great twist. However I thought the killer wouldnt be trinity, someone else instead…probably someone from rita’s past…remember her first wedding at the age of 16 which she hid from dex…thought it had something to do with that…and the bath tub format was only a cover to blame it on trinity. Thought dex would be the prime suspect for murdering his wife since he didnt have an allabie…he was busy butchering trinity at that very point of time… But now if it is trinity who killed her then the whole killing was piontless…the next season wont have anything to do with hunting for her killer…thats sad..
I was very disappointed by Rita’s death. Dexter was just realizing that maybe one day he would be able to take over from the dark passenger which Rita and the three kids helped him realize. Also the fact that the baby harrison was sitting in a blood puddle just like dexter did when he was younger and seeing his mother die, was a bit uncreative and the chances of it actaully happening are very small. I think all of us dont want harrison to turn out like Dexter, also how are Cody and Astra suppose to cope with their mothers death? They already lost their father Paul, and Dexter wont be able to cope after Rita’s death. Also SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many people die in this show that don’t need to. Since there cops you expect them to loose some loved ones, but everyone, especially Deb and Dexter have lost SOOOOOOOOOO many loved ones and ITS RIDICLOUS THAT THEY GET OVER IT SO QUICKLY/ NO ONE COULD HANDLE THAT!
I have a feeling that Rita really is dead, but I really hope it was just a nightmare as I love her characters and she is essential to the storyline. DEXTER AND THE CHILDREN WONT BE ABLE TO SURVIVE WITHOUT HER. And it dosent make sense how trinty found Rita! I’m so pissed off about Rita dying!!!
Come on, bring her back. Make it so that Dexter was knocked unconscious or something and was just imagining what could happen to Rita and the kids if he let the dark passenger take over !
RITA IS MISSED ! BRING HER BACK ITS WHAT THE AUDIENCE WANTS
It probably will make the story more interesting having Rita die, but she is loved to much to be rid off so quickly into her and dexters marriage!!
Come on, bring her back. Make it so that Dexter was knocked unconscious or something. Rita was a good fit in the show and it was so early into their marriage!
WRITERS, IF YOUR READING THIS, BRING RITA BACK, SURE IT MAY NOT BE THE MOST INTERESTING THING TO DO BUT THE AUDIENCE LOVES HER AND SHE IS NEEDED IN THE STORY
ok I just started watching dexter and I’m on season 3. I had to rent them because I’ve had basic cable for years. if rita officially dies I’m gonna be super angry at the show. I love rita! first there was that stupid asshole paul, then weirdo lila. then she gets pregnant and dies?? how lame! and when is deb gonna find out? I so want her to know.
WOW!!!…I just started watching Dexter a few weeks ago and just finished the 4th season an hour ago and I think I’m done watching for good now…im all for a good twist but killing Rita?!?! WTF I loved and raved about that show and now I just want to save people from the disappointment of Rita’s death. I agree with most of the other reviewers the show HAD a good balance of good vs evil and a sort of comfort and charm knowing that Dexter the killer also had the loving family that made him more human then monster and made Him want to rid himself of the evil passenger but now it just seems so empty….I may give the 5th season a try but it better be good because at this point I really don’t see a the point in watching it anymore everything I liked about it is gone…i think it’s going to be a whole different show completely without Rita and no other character will ever replace her…it’s really a shame I was so looking forward to season 5 up until that point :-/
They should of killed Debra I hate her. She is always like poor me look at me. Trinity was even in her apartment.
wow these people are crazy. killing rita off was spectacular. dexter is not immune to something evil happening to him…. the name of that episode should have been KARMA. i am an officer myself. and for people to not like that twist means you are boring with no imagination wat-so-ever. it amazes me how people dont like out the box. they have a whole new season with the ratings being up by 48 percent….. thank you writers keep up the good work cant wait for season six.
and to everyone who is mad about rita,,,, she didnt make the shows dexter did. and like his father said she was just another distraction
Yay. I’m glad Rits got killed. She was as broing as bat shit! M.
The fact that there are 150 posts is a credit to the writers of this show. I started watching box sets about three weeks ago and just finished season four. The final seen with Rita bloodied in a bathtub was one of the most powerful pieces of television i’ve ever witnessed. I was honestly shaken by it – she was brilliant and i’m disapointed and also wondering how the show can keep the balance which has made it what it is. However, the guys who’ve taken it this far are the best people to make that happen, and i’m sure they will. Just because your sad doesn’t mean you should go after the writers – if they’re drawing real emotion then they’re doing a great job. Can’t wait for season five.
Julie Benz is on another show no ordinary family I dont think that they could get her back if they wanted to…… Look up no ordinary family its a pretty good show……. :D……
i wont watch de show widout rita
I just finished season 4 and also was also both equally shocked and disappointed… But let’s face it, death is inevitable and as much as I am upset that Rita died, the writers probably HAD to do something drastic to add suspense and gain – rather than lose – more viewers.
Think of the psychology behind it: now what (who) is Dexter going to become? Will he flip out? Find resolve? Adopt Rita’s kids? Lose all of the children? Try to get rid of Harry? Change his attitude now that his life’s been shaken up again? Go back to solitude? Are some of Dexter’s secrets about to come pouring out to someone (maybe Deb)? Will he be in any trouble for all the mishaps that horrid day? So many scenarios and I anxiously await the release of season 5.
As disturbing as it was to watch Dexter find Rita dead, and I DO mean DISTURBING as the ending is still haunting me, the writers should be given much credit for having such a profound impact on the show’s viewers. I thought season 4 was the most suspense-filled season this far. The father of my baby and I have been watching it together and it even had HIM crying!

Think of the psychology behind it: now what (who) is Dexter going to become? He was just starting to embrace life as a family man. He was making progress by sorting out his feelings when imagining Harry (who I take as representing that ‘other’ voice we all have in our heads). Will he now regress and flip out? Or find resolve? Adopt Rita’s kids? Lose all of the children? Try to get rid of Harry? Change his attitude now that his life’s been shaken up again? Go back to solitude? […] from the Sun and Dexter alum comes from a season of winning an Emmy as Trinity Killer, and from killing Rita on Dexter, (I still miss Julie Benz on […]
Rita had ro die. she was needy and annoying. how could Dexter continue to be a great killer with her on his ass all the time. I am so happy they got rid of her.
just watched the last of season 4, IT SUCKED.
whywhywhywhy would u want rita dead!?!?!??!?!?
are u insane!
she better come back to life.
it must be a dream.
i’ve been crying all last night and this morning, she made dexter who he is!?!?
what will happen now!?!?!? will u even hav the decency to make him see her as a ghost with harry!?!??!
will he tell the police, or cute her up an have to get rid of her
…
i was so so so SO thrilled half way thru the episode, i thought he was going to try to become a better person, an it would be all happy families, btu deb finding out about him used to killing ppl, and then dex’s hard decisions to keep from killing, and instead just becoming and amazing guy at findin bad ppl, and then he cld becom a cop, then a detective!?!?!? then maybe, it wld be sad but, maybe dexter could just end, an be like a flash forward of him as an old man with rita and the kids and harrison,
HARRISON BETTER NOT BECOME A KILLER.
if he did it wld be unrealistic, he’d been in blood for only a couple hours, dexter had been practicly SWIMMING in it, for DAYS. and what about astor an cody huh!?!??! they’ve lost their mom. HOW DARE YYOU STUPID PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS AND WRITERS. i dont even think jeff lindsay would want this.
the alternate ending would NOT
WOULD NOT HAVE been disapointing, it wld be GREAT.
his choice between killing the kid, or going home to rita, HE COULD WALK INTO THEIR ROOM AND GO TO SLEEP. AND THEN WAKE UP WITH EVRY1 ALIVE.
i cant stop writing how mad i am.
only about 5% of ppl are okay with this decision. your retarded.
I have to say, i was truly, truly devestated with Rita dying at the end of Season 4. I still am now, and it’s been over a week since i watched that Episode.
However, i am backing the majority of the viewers.
To me, the show, – even though called ‘Dexter’, was all about the struggle for balance between his ‘personal hobby’, as we knew, and his family life – more so in Seasons 2, 3 and 4.
It wasn’t all about Dexter finding a constant in his life, but, also Rita looking for the same. They were both as equally and emotionally scarred as eachother, and, it was a highlight in the whole Series watching them strongly work on that and towards a better a life – with eachother. I believe it played as much a part in the whole Series than Dexter and his secret life, alone, did.
I concluded in myself that, before i had even watched it, Season 5 would lack a certain depth after the loss of Rita, and, not at all suprisingly, i thought it did. I wont talk too much about it incase some of you haven’t already watched it and just so happen to be reading thIs board.
There is a lot of ways the writers could have carried on a successful Series with Rita still alive, and, as extraordinary writers, i’m sure they know that too.
I also strongly believe that, even though Season 5 has ‘proved to be’ successful in regards to the amount of viewers reached, i would think that that would be down to the discouraged fans who watched the Season in hope that something good would come from it. Just like myself. I watched it, but, i personally thought it was the weakest Season to date (apart from the first Episode).
I think Season 6 will have a lot less viewers than the previous Seasons.
Another thing, and my final say. I unfortunately stumbled across the spoiler of Ritas death whilst i was only midway through Season 2. But, suprisingly, it was good for me. Because, from the moment i found out, as weird as it sounds, i personally ‘put myself’ into that relationship. It made me watch her Character even more closely, and the relationship she had with Dexter over Season 2, 3 and 4, and, what a Character she was. Sure we can say she had her little down sides, such as being a little needy and what not, but who, even more so in real life, wouldn’t be after what she’d been through throughout all the Seasons? Not to mention her abusive ex-husband.
I’ve never been so attatched to a Character in any TV-Series as much as i was with Rita. All i can say is kudos to the writers for making her Character as powerful as it was, and, Julie Benz herself for playing the part.
plssss bring rita back d show sucks widout her if ull r tryig to do sumthing wid lumen pierce n dexter its stupid coz rita was perfectttttt
I hate that Rita is gone without her I think that dexter does not know what to do I mean how is he going to raise three kids in the house where she died. The show will not be the same i think there is a way to make the ending of the show in the fourth season should somehow be made into a nightmare as well Rita wasn’t ready to be cut off the show and i think the main people who write the script should know that. There are other ways of making the show more interesting and complex without taking the mother of his children away when the two lost there dad in the season before that.
HAPPY MOTHER DAY TO EACH LADY IN THE WORLD AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND YES PORK CHOP LEGS LOOK GREAT.
I have just recently started watching Dexter and just finished the 4th season. When I saw that Rita was dead, I immediately thought it was a dream. Now I am really disappointed that she is ACTUALLY dead. How did she go off to The Keys with Dexter watching her leave. Dexter go to Trinity’s house, Trinity go to get the car from the car shop, go all the way to The Keys, convince Rita to come with him and bring the baby back to Miami, kill her and then get back on the road and have Dexter find him. Again.?? This was not a very well thought out ending. When Mr. TV Michael Ausiello did this interview with Executive Produce Clyde Phillips and they got to the part with the alternative ending about the child murderer, I would have actually LIKED that ending much more because it would have meant that Rita was still alive. And also, Rita’s murder doesn’t coincide with Trinity’s other killings because it had been more than five days since he kidnapped the little boy.
Obviously NOT a well thought out ending. I am very disappointed.
Rita’s character truly brought real dimension to Dexter and I don’t believe the show will ever be the same. Unless they can somehow bring her back to life (although I don’t quite see how) then I’m sad to say that I don’t think I’ll watch it anymore. It was my favorite show. Oh well. Some writers just don’t get it
Season 4 was uncomfortable with so many mistakes by Dexter. Rita’s death was the moment I decided not to see the movie again, (did not see season 5). First because her loss was too much to bear and secondly watching the movie without Rita (who was such a lovely character), is like seeing a different movie. Very disappointing! Pain makes movies interest however overuse of it can have the opposite results!
As much as I think that killing Rita was a great piece of writing drama, the actual event makes me sad. Nothing I’ve seen on Dexter has disturbed me (even the bathtub kill scene at the beginning of season 4), but that ending freaked me out.
IMHO, the allure of Dexter for me was the fact that he led a double-life, and his “significant other” was completely oblivious. Rita was more than a ‘love interest’ (like Lumen or Lila), she was a part of the Dexter package. I respect the opinion of those who say that now Dexter can go back to his full-blown dark side, but for me, I have no interest in seeing that; I liked conflicted Dexter.
My other issue is with how season 5 played out; if Rita was killed, the two plot points I was most interested in seeing were 1)Dexter as potential suspect, “The Fugitive”-style, and 2)Dexter’s struggle to raise the kids by himself. Neither one of those got enough mileage for me. Or that the killer wasn’t Trinity, but somebody else, which apparently is not the case.
[…] babysitter, and new villains, but also having Dexter Morgan getting used to some new life, after Rita was killed, and Lumen […]
I’m still shocked they got Rita killed..I will see season 5 on the following days, but it won’t be the same…to bad they didn’t go with the alternative ending…it SUCKS
what Sophie said in the comment before was the best idea of a happy ending….
But still not always there will be a happy ending, I’ve been upset for a long time after watching that episode, I mean killing Debra would have been better than this
I agree with Sami (Is this Sami my bigger brother, who introduced me to Dexter?). I think killing Debra would have been much better than killing Rita. Although Debra is important relative to Dexter, she doesn’t create so much conflict and contrast between Dexter’s daylife (as Rita does as a wife) and with Dexter’s dark passanger’s nightlife. I mean now Dexter is almost like any stereotypical serial killer: a 30-45 years old male without a family (except for Harrison), since Rita is dead and her kids are sent elsewhere. Rita and her kids were what made the show Dexter really Dexter. To me the show never was primarily about killing the bad guys or even about the code. To me the most interesting feature in Dexter was the conflict between two sides of his life. That is now almost taken. It just sucks. The show just isn’t what it used to be.
2017 and recently watched Dexter. Excited bout season 1-4 but after that pooof skipped thru the series and mehh.. Could have been better if Rita was around
