Lost and Philosophy: The Island Has Its Reasons Book Review

lost-and-philosophy-island-has-its-reasons-book-reviewThis book is not new. It has some time already, but it´s a good read, and I haven´t gotten myself to read it until lately. It is a good thing to read about the show after it ended, or at least feels different. Perhaps if I read the book while the show was still on, I would´ve taken different thigns from it.

Another good thing (or at least interesting) is that the authors of each essay hadn´t seen the whole series before writing about it, since the book came out while on season four. Continue reading

10 Sci-Fi Shows that (Pretty Much) Hit the Big Time

Science fiction has always been one of the most popular genres: in video games, books, movie, and TV. Over the years there have been countless attempts to create a television series which managed to bring sci-fi to a mass audience, and quite a few of them have succeeded reasonably well. But there’s a balance that these programs need to strike: the show needs to be the perfect blend of drama and science fiction. That way, the producers are able to please (almost) everyone. Let’s take a look at ten of the best examples of TV shows that took a sci-fi premise and practically turned it into a global sensation.

10. Babylon Five

This show is one of those cult favourites that had a mixed reception on TV but a huge following on DVD. Babylon 5 is a show that was almost a mix between a soap opera and a sci-fi show. It was quite light-hearted and always had a fairly ‘budget’ look. Costumes were a particular highlight, so if you haven’t seen this show yet do yourself a favour and pick it up.

9. Sliders

The mid-late 90s sci-fi show Sliders told the tale of a group of travellers jumping from parallel universe to parallel universe thanks to a faulty wormhole device. Each week saw our heroes in a slightly different version of our world (one populated entirely by females, for example), all the while attempting to ‘slide’ their way home. The show did seem to tire a little by the end, but the early seasons in particular are well worth a watch!

8. Firefly

Before Joss Whedon’s Firefly came along, the phrase ‘sci-fi western’ hadn’t really been heard before. Widely considered to have been cut short at its prime, Firefly follows the story of the crew of the ship Serenity, and is set in a steampunk-inspired world with a Wild West sensibility. The series also spawned a movie which is loved by fans across the world. This show is the definition of a cult classic, and will delight sci-fi fans and human drama fans alike.

7. 3rd Rock from the Sun

This may seem an odd choice, but it’s a rather unique show. It’s essentially a sci-fi sitcom, and it took the world by storm. Now that it’s all wrapped up, you can enjoy six seasons of ‘aliens pretending they’re human’ comedy gold.

6. Quantum Leap

Similar thematically to Sliders, Quantum Leap remains one of the most popular sci-fi shows of all time. It follows our hero Sam Beckett in his attempt to ‘jump’ home. Every time he jumps to a parallel universe he awakes inside the body of someone else, and cannot leave until he has fixed some aspect of their life. A very interesting premise with five satisfying seasons to its name.

5. Star Trek: The Next Generation

Do we really need to say much about Star Trek? Sure, there are a lot of different variants to choose from, but The Next Generation is generally heralded as one of the best. Not as camp as the original series, with far more complex characterisation. Plus there are plenty of episodes to really get your teeth into.

4. The X-Files

Here’s a sci-fi show whose legacy is still continuing today. Starting in the mid-90s and taking the world by storm, the X-Files was as creepy as it was well-scripted. Each episode (at least in the original series) followed FBI agents Mulder and Scully and their run-ins with a number of paranormal activity. There were all sorts of sub-plots going on, and the series even brought about two movies. Plus it’s got one heck of a theme tune!

3. Fringe

A more recent entry here, Fringe (at time of writing) is just about to enter its fourth season. It’s hard to talk much about the plot without spoiling it, but the core concept is a ragtag group who form the ‘Fringe’ department of the FBI. Each episode can stand alone but there’s a also a great overarching story. Fan favourite Walter Bishop makes this show worth watching all on his own, but the story is also highly compelling and comes highly recommended.

2. Battlestar Galactica

This franchise began in 1978 with a fairly corny but still well-received series, but it recently got a face-lift and subsequently had four seasons and a spin-off. The show follows the crew of the Battlestar Galactica (and humans in general) in their fight against the Cylons – a robot race that they themselves created. With their ability to take human form, there’s a lot to love in this series, and now it’s complete you can enjoy it in its entirety.

1. LOST

Ask anyone which show dominated the first ten years of this century and they’d have to answer with LOST. OK, so it raised more questions than it answered, but for the fans following the plane crash survivors, LOST was an unforgettable journey. The six seasons cover all sorts of topics, from time travel to good vs evil, and it’s hard to do the show justice in one paragraph. Just watch it; you won’t regret it.

Cancelled and Renewed Shows 2010: Big Love cancelled, ends at Season 5

big-love-cancelled-renewed-hbo-season-five

Update: Make sure to participate in my Big Love Contest and Giveaway for the chance to win DVD sets from the show.

We are reviewing all the cancelled shows and renewed shows of the season.

This fall season, a lot of shows are falling like crazy. NBC already cancelled Outlaw, ABC Family cancelled Huge, Fox cancelled Lone Star, ABC cancelled My Generation, and also cancelled The Whole Truth, and MTV cancelled The City in its second season.

Some are getting renewed, since HBO renews Eastbound & Down for season three, and also renews Bored to Death for season three.

But in this case, HBO cancels Big Love after its fifth season. Should it count as a cancellation or not?

I´m still not sure. Fortunately the show will have a full closure season, and maybe it will end as planned, same thing as Friends, Lost, Seinfeld and Six Feet Under(to name a few), shows that had their run and planned ahead for the ending.

Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer will write the closer as the series’ finale.

As Deadline.com reported, “It has been an honor and pleasure to work with series creators Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer on this unique and provocative series, and I’m happy that they will be able to bring the story to its close the way they always envisioned,” HBO’s president of programming Michael Lombardo said. “We look forward with great anticipation to collaborating with Mark and Will on their next venture.” Olsen and Scheffer are working on a new project for the pay cable network, which will be announced shortly.

Many people and Big Love fans were estranged with season four of the show, and therefore I don´t see much surprise in the fact that HBO cancels Big Love, but, the show had three quite solid seasons, even earning some Emmy Awards love.

What do you think? Are you sad HBO is cancelling Big Love after season five? Would you like more Big Love?

Let me know in the comments section.

Also, remember to follow me on Twitter for more info on cancelled and renewed shows, such as this cancellation for Big Love by HBO.

Lost The Movie, Lost the Prequel, a Possibility?

lost-movie-prequel-showSo, Lost ended this year and we are already having the withdrawal of it.

Flash Forward was a nice try to inherit the Lost Mania, but it did not mesh the same with the audiences, and ABC cancelled Flash Forward on its rookie season.

The Event is the new try at a deservant heir to the Lost throne. But audiences are still not going with it. Heroes got cancelled with a oes-not-give-me-any-closure type of ending. So this misterious big storylines shows are not all the success that Lost proved to be, and the studios are trying to recreate that kind of hit.

How are they going to make it?

Well, today Carlton Cuse, one of the Producers of Lost, alongside Damon Lindelof the heads of the show, said that there could be a Lost movie on the making. Or there could be a sequel to Lost.

This is not something they are planning right now, but there have been some talks from Disney hinting they may want to expand on the Lost franchise.

Lost Series Finale gets extended – 30 more minutes on Lost finale

lost season finale extended 30 minutes aloha lostAll the Lost fans craving the show not to end are going to get some good news… Lost will continue… well, just for 30 minutes.

The Lost series finale will get an extended version to air. So probably a couple more knots will be tied.

As TV Guide reports, The drama’s series finale will now run two-and-a-half hours. The episode, scheduled to air Sunday, May 23 at 9/8c, will push the local news back a half-hour, followed by the previously announced post-finale special, Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost, at 12:05 a.m.

What do you think about Lost extension on the series finale?

Lost Final Season Spoilers: Is Desmond coming back to the Island?

lost final season spoilers lost panel tv festWell, well… I have many many spoilers of Lost Finale that were revealed during Lost Panel at TV Fest.

Let´s start by saying there was neither a Yes nor a No to anything, so, this is just reading between the lines, and I may or may not be wrong, and you can go to the comments section to give your thoughts:

Is Desmond coming back to the Island?

Yes

Was Desmond on the Plane?

Maybe, my guess he was not, but he´s coming back (As Jakob said “someone´s coming” may well be him)

Does Jack´s Last Name mean anything to the story?

Yes, he´s the Shepherd.

Is Jack still married?

Yes, and I have three options here, his first wife, Kate or Anna Lucia.

Is there going to be a Hurley and Libby centered episode?

Perhaps not a full episode, but we´ll see some of them and their connection explained.

Is Charlie coming back to Lost?

Yes, he is (Yay!)

Is Vincent coming back to Lost?

Also yes.

Will we know the ending of Ben and Annie love story?

Nope, sorry.

Are they going to explain the purple circles in Bender´s mural?

No, they´ll leave them like that.

Is Walt going to back to the island of Lost?

I´m not counting on it, remember he must be at least one feet taller than last time on the Island… so, they would need to take that also into consideration.

Will we know what is it with the Hurley Bird?

Just maybe.

Damon Lindelof said “Water” as a big spoiler… what does that mean?

My thought is the Island is going under water… what do you think?

Is Lost filming schedule on danger due to earthquakes on Hawaii?

lost final season delayed by earthquake in hawaiiWhere´s the actual island of Lost is a mistery, and it also keeps moving.

Where´s the island where they film Lost is another story. It´s in Hawaii Film Studio 18th Avenue & Diamond Head Road, Honolulu, O’ahu, Hawaii, USA; the very same studio where Baywatch, Hawaii 5-0, Jake and The Fatman, 50 First Dates, Magnum P.I. among others were filmed.

But, due to recent Geological events, Hawaii is in alert of earthquakes and tsunamis, as Damon Lindelof twitted himself:

Praying for Chile and all the islands of Hawaii. Please send our cast and crew all your positive energy.

What does this mean? Is the schedule of Lost going to be modified due to nature? Is the Island trying to delay the filming? Not for the moment, but I´m sure they are having one eye on the weather and one eye on the set.

The important thing, of course is that everyone is safe, and our best wishes go to Chile and Hawaii.

But what does it say if the Island and nature won´t let the team complete the filming of the show?

Our hearts go to Chile and Hawaii, as well as Haiti and every other person who may suffer from nature.

Lost Season Six Spoilers: Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse Spoilers

Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse Lost SpoilersIn the verge of the new and last season of Lost, we get the goods… a message from Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, creators of Lost with tons of spoilers… or so they say.

Probably they are teasing with us… but it´s worth to read what they are saying about these Lost Final Season Spoilers.

What do Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse say about these Lost Spoilers?

An excerpt from The TV Addict. Read the full story over there

“Starting with the season premiere, the remaining clues necessary to figure out where we’re going to end the show are going to begin falling into place,” promised Lindeloff at the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour. “My hope is certainly by the time the finale airs, plenty of people who have been thinking about the ending will feel enormously gratified that they guessed it right.”

“Yes, there was a time when there were 23 million people were watching LOST and that time has past,” reflected Lindelof on the show’s penchant for hemorrhaging viewers frustrated over the lack of answers. “Every time the show took a risk and declared itself more overtly there were people who were saying, ‘I wasn’t watching a show about time travel!’ But we have to tell the story that we’re committed to and hopefully the audience will stick with us.”

“Obviously not every question is going to be answered and, some people are going to be upset that those particular questions don’t get resolved,” added co-executive producer Carlton Cuse. “We really embrace this notion that there’s a fundamental sort of sense of mystery that we all have in our lives, and certainly that is a huge part of the lives of these characters, and to sort of demystify that by trying to literally explain everything down to the last little sort of metachlorian of it all would be a mistake in our view.  So I think fans can expect a kind of healthy cocktail of answers, mystery, good character resolutions and some surprises.”

Who says “Previously on Lost” on Lost? Lloyd Braun former ABC Exec

who is the voice of previosuly on lostOk, it´s not one of the great Lost misteries.

It´s not something you´ll be waiting for the Lost series finale to divulge. It´s something you don´t read on Lost Final Season Spoilers.

But it´s a colorful question you might have had:

Who is the voice behind “Previously on Lost”?

So… if you want to know it, it´s Lloyd Braun, a former ABC Exec, who greenlit the show, but got fired before it even aired for the first time.

On this interview for NYMag, by Cristopher Rosen (for the full interview visit the link) he answers the following questions:

You’ve said that when you read the outline for Lost, you told a friend that it was the next ER. Do you still feel that way?

The show clearly evolved from that 22-page outline. But did you see Lost going to the place it’s at right now?

As it happened, you left ABC before Lost even aired, and it went on to become a phenomenon. Do you feel vindicated at all by the success, or is it bittersweet because you weren’t there to revel in it?

Yeah, how did that come about?

You mentioned that during the development process, Abrams and Lindelof had a theory about what was wrong with the island. Based on that, do you think you know how Lost is going to end?

Okay. One last thing: Do you know what the smoke monster is?
